While the little Rat is to be praised for offering the wage slaves $2000
to convert to LPG isnt it a fact that the LR intends to jack up the
price of LPG to equal that of ULP within a few years ?
So we'll be worse off by converting to LPG :-(

  2. Well, what looks good from far is far from good. Every time this man comes
out with some thing which looks good has always proven to be bad further
down the track. Get use to the fork tongue talking.

Far be it from me to apparently defend the bugger, but:

    - A $2000 grant will bring the price of an LPG conversion down to the
    $500-$1000 range;
    - With petrol at $1.35 and LPG at $0.55, your average 8km/litre
Falcadore will save about $0.075 per kilometre
    - That means that you'll save $750 in about 10,000km (or 6 months);
    - LPG is going to have excise applied starting in 2008;
    - It's going to be a phased introduction, not a $0.75-per-litre jump in
    one go.

I can't say that I'm happy about this thing because:

    - Just like they introduced the "First home buyer's grant" a year after
I bought my first home, they've introduced this long after I paid full
    price for my vehicle's LPG conversion;
    - With more people driving on LPG, demand will increase and so will the
    price.

But the bottom line is that if you're driving a Falcadore or Toorak
Tractor, this is an opportunity to grab with both hands.

lpg jumped from 52c to 82 cents here overnight when lil johnybrought that
in, lpg is now not cost effective, i beleive its something like 2.5x lpg use
over petrol, so it has to be atleast 2.5x less than petrol.

on that note, why are you putting this is a motorcycle newsgroup, i have yet
to see a lpg powered bike!

Some boffin types somewhere managed to convert a bike (CBR600??) to Gas, not
that long ago. It had a number of smaller tanks inplace of the usual petrol
tank I think, and a shroud to hide them. Crap range due to lack of storage
    capacity from memory.

  6. Average Falcon gets between 5 and 7 kilometres per litre on gas
I travel around 2000 kilometres per week

savings are better, but performance lacks a little
If there is any way that the Government can take money off the public, they
    will find it.
with the "phasing in " of increased LPG prices, when that is done, the
savings will not be that great.

The main trouble with fossil fuels, whether it be petrol, LPGas or diesel,
they will all run out one day

It wasn't really a grant for nothing, it was to offset the impact of the
GST on the price of materials and labour in the construction of a home.
Home buyers didn't benefit from that, the government did.
You've already received the best value for money from your conversion so
don't feel too bad. Pity those who only recently paid full price for a
conversion and won't gain the same fuel savings benefits in the future.
Absolutely, and when market forces cause the price of LPG to raise to a
level at which it is no longer economical to convert a car, the
government no longer have to pay rebates and they can point the finger
at the LPG suppliers and petrol retailers and wash their hands of the
problem, as per their usual M.O.

You also forgot to add Health Insurance to the list of criminal acts of
Howard & co. helping their mates to that list. They give the health
insurers a license to print money by forcing taxpayers to buy health
insurance then give the health insurers a practical carte blanche to
increase their premiums by more than 10% per annum in excess of CPI year
after year. Mine has increased 70% in 4 years, all with the tick of
    approval from Howard & co.

My understanding is that there is to be an excise on LPG, but it won't
bring it anywhere near the cost of petrol. I believe it will bring the
running costs of my LPG 4WD campervan up to about the same as my 1000cc
    Motorcycle.

Heard it advertised on the radio this morning (gov't advert). I imagine
the people doing the conversions would probably be the best source of
information, forms etc.. it's in their interest to be.

That's just what I reckoned would happen.
Absolute bollocks. Or if you prefer, "You're correct to within a
    factor of 10".

An average vehicle will use approximately 15-20% more litres of LPG
than petrol for the same distance travelled. In my
back-of-the-envelope calculation I assumed 8km/litre for petrol, and
    7km/litre for LPG.
They're doing just that in Vietnam, and Thailand.

Damn you Nev - why can't you just let me enjoy my sour grapes in peace?
    ;-)
It would be better if they were encouraging compressed natural gas
(CNG) conversions and service-station availability though. LPG is a
refinery byproduct of petrol/diesel production, and we aren't
self-sufficient in oil any more, but we *are* in natural gas (for now,
    anyway).

Here's some propaganda from the NRMA and RACQ:

By making it uneconomical for people not to have health insurance, of if
you prefer, they force people to pay extra tax as a penalty for not
buying health insurance. Choose your favourite.

The price of LPG is already artificially inflated because it is linked
to world parity pricing and has been for 15 years. If you'd paid
attention you would know that it has "fluctuated and sky-rocketed" just
    like petrol.

Actually it's an economic decision, rather than a value judgement, but
you were just disagreeing for the sake of splitting hairs. Move along,
    nothing to see here.

In Queensland having no health insurance means you have to line up to have a
    heart attack.
