Lubricating a motorcycle chain

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Baron Von Rotter, Jul 27, 2005.

  1. Is there a way to lubricate your chain under the following conditions:

    1. only yourself available for the task
    2. hard standing
    3. no centre stand but functional side stand
    4. commercial can of chain lube
    5. you are about 6ft tall, 79kg
    6. limited space so you cant roll it forwards and backwards
    7. no money to purchase fangdangled jibbers to do it for you
    8. you are a scott oiler hater
    9. you dont want to get your leg rooter dirty

    any suggestions?

sit on the bike, do a burnout. While using the throttle and brake with your
right hand apply oil to the moving chain with your left hand.

Spray heaps of oil all over the rear sprocket then go for a ride around the
    block.
    Check chain, repeat as necessary.

Make up a small set of rollers to put your back wheel on.

This one works a treat BVR.

Tie up the front brake and/or have the front tyre against a wall. Get a
breaker bar or similar bar and lift the bike up via the right rear side of
the bike. Prop it up. You'll only need the wheel 2 cm off the ground at
most then rotate the wheel by hand whilst applying the chain lube.

One of these gadgets helps you clean the chain as well as apply the lube.

For the love of god, don't use your engine to rotate the wheel! ;)

Grab that handy scissor jack you've got lying around in the missis 1985
corolla, grab some wood, wack it under the suspension linkage point, jack it
up a bit. Go around to chain, oil the inside run of the chain and you're
    done.

    1. Leave bike on sidestand

    2. Front brake on and handlebars turned to left (tape front brake lever or
    old sock wrap it)

    3. get a car scissor jack under the rear suspension linkage and raise rear
    wheel.

NO, you should take it back to the store. You are not the sort of person
that that can have a motorcycle.

Unless you have a modern faired sportsbike which has undertray going all the
way back to the rear wheel and you don't feel like spending 15 mins removing
fairing every time you need to lube the chain.

OH! a rivetted metal link drive thing

    best suited to industrial machinery

take it back and get another one

    otherwise;

    squat on left side of bike {parked, stand down}
pull it over - via handlebars - so it balances on sidestand with left hand
engage lube can in correct orientation with right hand
    spray bottom run of...drive thing
    put can down
rotate wheel till unsprayed length appears on bottom run using right hand
    re-engage can
    spray
repeat until entire length of drive is coated with chosen lubricant
return bike to operational attitide WRT hard stand

    operational note;

don't spray too much lubricant on; with O-ring chains you are only
lubricating the sprocket/chain interface - important but not critical

if one of them drives is used in an industrial environment contaminated
with fibreglass dust, it is better to run it dry to prevent premature
wear caused by dust build up on lubricant

There's a way around this too. On the scissor jacks you can just grap the
rear bobbin area on the right hand side of the swingarm. If you use the jack
on the bobbin pick up lug you're ok. There's a touch of movement as it goes
up, and I had to wiggle the jack about slightly so it wouldn't rub against
the tyre, but it worked a charm anyway. If you've got a bolt or something
lying around that fits the bobbin, put that in and you'll be sorted.
