Yes, it seems that this is a common denominator among the replies. I guess if you're a bit of a bloater it may be difficult getting fat bastard shirts that don't have sleeves down to the floor. I've not had anything but 100% cotton formal shirts for the last 20+ years. Not exactly difficult to find in normal shops. Well yes, me too, although in my case 'business casual' is jeans (or shorts in the summer) and a T-shirt. I still have four or five 'good' suits (mostly M&S) but only wear one, and hence collar & tie, about once a year max for weddings etc. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Well then I'm definitely not too far away (Gresham Street). There are a couple of decent and affordable Japanese restaurants around there if you're up for that kind of stuff.
I know I've bumped into you (and McFrame) around Leadenhall before, but as a reminder, myself and Kiran are only the other side of Houndsditch if this turns into some kind of UKRM lunch-fest.
I think the only way I'd get shirts to fit really well would me MTM and I really can't be bothered for the number of times I wear a formal shirt these days. And even when I wore a proper shirt for work every day, I still couldn't be bothered. Quite.
Oi! I'm not a bloater and I still find that I get a better fit from Lewin or Thyrwitt shirts. What annoys me is that they often don't come with the shirt pocket that any kind of engineer including a software one needs. BTW, it looks like you got lucky paywise - I just had a little exchange with a recruiter in Switzerland who was admant that pay in Zurich was lower than in London. Oddly enough I haven't heard back from him since he found out what my current rate is...
Depends on the industry. SAS contract programming in the ppharma industry has always been poorly rewarded compared with 'proper' IT work, as most of it is stats reporting work which doesn't generally demand good programming and design skills. This spills over, in the UK, to other areas of work, so although I was able to find contracts at various times in the late 1990s, it was always an effort to get the pharma companies to pay anything close to ukp50/hr. My contract when I came over here was somewhat more than that, because I said I wouldn't work for less than my UK rate plus additional expenses, and then I only took something like a 25% (gross) cut when I went permie, so I guess it's more down to them recognising a specific skillset and rewarding it on an individual basis. I still think, though, that our contract SAS coding monkeys get more than they would in the UK. Heh. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. I'm having mental images of a stocky, unshaven man in fatigues, with a blacked-up face, a H&K MP5 slung across his back and a combat knife in one hand, looking around furtively before typing each line of code.
We've met then? BTW Adie's also a SAS programmer, FWIW... -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ DS#8 BOTAFOT#3 SbS#2 UKRMMA#13 DFV#8 SKA#2 IBB#10 `\\ | //' `\|/` `
M&S shirts seem to fit me fine. The Outlet Village in Swindon has some decent shirt shops that sell good makes at the same sort of prices as M&S/JL et. al A 'named make' shirt (assuming you fit within the body-shape parameter for that brand) will often be a better shape than a generic. Phil.

I've done loads of other stuff over the years as well, but I've been using SAS since around 1981, from Mainframes to PC-DOS, Windows, Vax and various Unixen. Not done me too badly, I reckon. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) \`\ | /`/ DS#8 BOTAFOT#3 SbS#2 UKRMMA#13 DFV#8 SKA#2 IBB#10 `\\ | //' `\|/` `
Heck, I've contracted at 40/hr in the City at that point in time. Mind you, I was young and I needed the money. Or something like this. These days I manage to a little more than that... That's fair enough - contract to perm usually means that you're slightly better paid than people who started as permies. I'm tempted to wave my CV at him and innocently ask why I haven't heard back from him .
I think the EC3 Clique might need to be reconstituted. SD is down Canon St way, I'm on Bishopsgate, Darsey is over Ludgate Hill way (?) there's you & Kiran over at Aldgate and Timo at Gresham St so somewhere Moorgate ish might be relatively central for everyone especially that WUN.
Not pricey at all - there's so many shirt makers vying for business that prices are pretty good. TM Lewin retail of 60-70 per shirt is never what you pay- usually deals on multples that work out at 20/25 per shirt. The same for Hawes & Curtis, which I prefer. Only Thomas Pink seem to try to avoid being in the same business volume market.
I get my house keeper to do the ironing. Not that she's any good at it. I ripped a shirt a couple of weeks ago (on the front, a good couple of inches long) and instead of making it into the piles for rags, it got into the laundry and neatly ironed. And I didn't notice when I put it on. Hence the emergency trip to Lewins.
