For people who use the M25 the trigger speed has been reduced in the
variable speed section when the national speed limit is shown. It is
now 96mph (reduced from 104). New cameras are also being trialled but
arent live as yet (sometime next year)
And standyby for *massively* reduced limits in 2005 as enforcement for
the M25 is privatised and there will be only minimal police precence.
More updates as I get them

Now I know why I had never got a ticket riding round there.

When did we vote on this then? I don't recall anybody asking me if we
could take janitors off the streets. I am sure I recall promises to
    have more.

    Please.

  4. *You* might not have, but doesn't your car or bike?
Heh. Quite. How long do you reckon it will take from Leytonstone[1] to
get to Heathrow for about 7:30pm [2] on Saturday?

    [1] don't ask.

I sometimes go between Jn 15 (M4) and 18 (Rickmansworth) and keep
looking at the gantrys in both directions but haven't managed to
spot a Gatso. Are there any?

AFAIK they're only within the variable speed section which
    ends at Jct 15, clockwise.

There are definitely some VSL signs between 15 and 16.

  8. Is this as bad as I think it is? By enforcement, do you mean that Joe
Bloggs' Wheel Clamping and Enforcement Firm will be able to pull people
    over with blues?

Or is it more that they will be able to man speed traps and help out at
    accidents, or....?

Some gantries have them, some don't. Look in your mirror for four
grey boxes hidden behind the signs. Don't get them confused with the
light units to illuminate the signs themselves.

No, they'll be 'maintaining' the cameras, and doing the administration
to send out any fixed penalties, and, I presume, sending out the Court
Docs to the real baddies who do over 100mph.
For this they'll probably get a percentage of any money collected.

yup - they will have the power to pull over vehicles and prosecute
A minimal police presence will deal with accidents but that wont be a
    priority!

They will have the power to stop vehicles. They will also set the
trigger speeds for the cameras - which I have every confidence will be
set to the ACPO tolerance of 10% plus two mph

Scrapping of traffic police basically. Only a minimal police presence
using an amalgamated M25 police unit (made up of all the forces that
currently police it). Every force has basically halved their traffic
departments over the last 3 years anyway - who needs them when you
    have gatsos????

Ahem... what's the trigger speed at the moment, when they're displaying 50
    and 60mph then?
They were showing a public info announcement in the bar of the ferry I came
back from Calais on, last Sunday, on this very subject.

It reckoned they'd be maintaining 4 lanes each way, but at a much reduced
    width.

Whatever, a particularly horrid section of the M25 is going to be even more
horrid for the next 2 years or so.

    TIA

(not having a go at JP, just curious)
Who are these people who can pull you over then?
Doesnt it need an act of Parliament to do this (obviously not if they
are doing it).So we're going to have civilians manning Police cars,( or
do they supply their own cars), then they can drive like lunatics, to
catch the lunatics that are doing 100mph.
If they are just members of the public, can you just tell them to FO?
Like when a Security guard asks you to move along on a railway station
(this has been covered in uk.railway recently), you ask him what law you
are breaking etc, they havent got a clue, they just want you to move, and
then threaten to call the real Police.
Wouldnt the local Police have a real disdain for these private law
    enforcers?

  17. Blimey. They set it as high as that????

Mind you, 96mph isn't bad either.

As they won't actually be police officers, what happens (legally) if you
    decide not to stop?
