5k, i'm far too hetro for an MX5, S2000 are too expensive.

I reckon a facelift S3 225bhp can be powered up to 300 easy enough &
it's 4wd. Cant get over how cheap some motors are now.

That just proves you're not hetro enough. Real men know how damn good
they are, & care not about the taunts.
Surprising how well they hold their value. I'll have one one day.
Yebbut 4wd's not fun unless you're on gravel. Fast yes, but not fun.

To be fair, i'm just too big for 'em

Awesoem engine sounds with a nice stainless exhaust on :)
I really want an original 2wd cosworth, but there's not many of those about.

I had one of those in 1990. Like most people, I unintentionally took it off
roading. General Accident repaired it but it seems someone else has managed
to kill it as it isn't on askmid.

I really want a Stratos with a naked Natalie Imbruglia in the passenger
seat, but there's not many of those about either.

That's not really what you want for an introduction to track driving
if you want to build up driving skills above and beyond "driving a
    fast car slowly".

To be fair, i really would like an M3, but costs can be fucking stupid, an
S3 gives most of what I want without as much of the scary costs.

My eyes keep wandering over M5's too.....

Yup, and I thought a car track day tool of choice would be a Caterham or
    similar?

A Boxster makes a nice track day car, I don't know what the lower end of
prices are these days. My 944 was excellent but it's hard to find a good
low mileage one these days. Only the 2.7Lux mind, the S2 engine costs too
    much to maintain.

I'm assuming you know to avoid the M3 Vanos engines? and that early 3 Ser
(and 5's) are pretty damn twitchy at the rear. It doesn't need to be an M3
for track fun BTW. A 318iS coupe is great. One of the guys teaching
technique at Kirkiston used one of those.

.... which are brutally expensive to run as a track car compared to, say,
an M3. The additional weight really doesn't help, and the later 3.8
engine (if we're talking E34 here) doesn't like sustained high revs
much. And you really don't want to find out how much an M engine costs
    to rebuild.

Shhhhh, *WE* want to find out how much they cost to rebuild. Think of
the entertainment value in swearing alone?
