  1. Is quite nice really..

Now for the last bit - newsreaders.. I know people use MacSoup but are
there any free ones that work? I've pretty much managed to get freeware
for everything else I need (NeoOffice, CyberDuck etc etc).

Now the only thing left to do is get it to join my Active Directory
domain - the Join function fails on step 5 with 'an unknown error
    occurred'..

  3. Yeah - I'm already using it for mail (I didn't like the Apple Mail
client much especially as it kept whinging about the (perfectly valid)
SSL key I have for my IMAPS server) so I might give it a whirl for news
    too.

Other than that I like it. I already have all the standard unix tools
on it (gcc et. al) and a shortcut to a terminal on the menu bar..

In the end I shelled out for Hogwasher.

Now parallels does seamless desktop integration of Windows apps, though, I
    might switch back to OE

  10. I use that via ssh to my usual box at the moment.. I've got the Apple
dev environment installed so I guess I can build slrn too.

  12. MacSoup is only a few bucks and is really, really good. Better yet, if
you do encounter an oddity or have a query you can get a personal reply
from the guy wot wrote it, Stefan Haller.

Agreed, although it'd be even better if you could i) invoke your scores
directly from the group view instead of having to do a copy and paste and
go into APPLE-J, and ii) if you could configure an external editor to do
    your posts.

Hogwasher is a pain in the arse with the way that it threads articles.
Sorts them in the date of the last post rather than the date of the
    original article IYSWIM.
