No, as a _direct_ and _specific_ result of their actions.

FFS, which part of "if you involve yourself with significant
quantities of illegal drugs in any number of S E Asian countries,
you *will* die" are you suggesting that these punters didn't
comprehend? It's not like it's a big secret or anything.

Case in point below - these people did something horrific to another
human, displaying they lack a certain level of humanity. No doubt in
this case he is guilty becaused he confessed.

Man jailed for 18 years over acid murder
The court had been told that Tan initially contracted AB to splash acid
on Li's face to scare Ma out of hiding, but AB refused, instead
    recruiting two other hitmen.

On December 13, 2002 the hitmen went to Li's Concord home and poured
hydrochloric acid over his face and down his throat, blinding him and
causing severe facial and internal burns.

He said AB had been out on parole for only several weeks in 2002 when
he was approached by Tan to carry out the attack on Li, and agreed to
    contract the two hitmen.

    Because it feels GREAT!!
It's the just the BEST rush.
What's wrong with all the current education and prohibition programs is
that they don't acknowledge why it is that people use these drugs and they
paint users as some kind of lunatic self-abusers and thus different from
the rest of the citizens who only use alcohol, tobacco, sugar, junk-food,
speeding etc etc to get their rushes......

  6. I do wonder if the AFP might have passed on the info to the Indonesian

While as said they had done nothing wrong yet in aussie, when they got
    back they would have..

The credit the bacon would have got for the bust would have been worth
it to their PR dept, but as you say, what the courts would have done
from there .. who knows probably the usual, suspended sentence or
    similar.

    (snip)
As far as I'm aware places like Saudi Arabia apply the death penalty to
crimes like adultery, possession of pornography or alcohol-use.
I wonder if our federal police know of any Aussies breaking those laws and
have dobbed them in to the locals......

No it's not a big secret, but the AFP passing information that results
in death of an Australian citizen was (at least until recently).

And should be grounds for an inquiry, and a change of policy!

Without that passed information I would have agreed it was a direct
result, with it it becomes indirect.

But you were the one who sought to associate the homicide rate against
the penalties in Australia and assert that they had made no difference.
I pointed out that in the 20 years following the last execution the
homicide rate in Australia doubled. The ABS graph clearly shows that
the homicide rate doubled after 1967 and that it was a long term upward
trend. The text even states that.

But Biggus, we don't read the papers.. we rely on you to cut and paste
every article which is newsworthy here in ausmoto... Which is good in
a way, because at least some of the stuff you post makes sense and uses
appropriate capital letters, punctuation and grammar (except for that
    bloody American spelling of gaol).

That isn't causative though Nev! The graph clearly shows that the
murder rate fluctuates up and down during the time period where the
death penalty exists and continues to do so after it is introduced, in a
manner very similar to that beforehand.

If the trend had been upwards and continued upwards and then stabilised
in a higher trend line then you could safely assert what you are claiming.

I was saying (and continue to believe) that the death penalty made no
difference to the continuing mean rate of homicides over extended time.

If you look at most graphs of events then you will see short term ups
and downs which are normal random fluctuations. What is important is
    the trend line.

I'm disappointed to note that the SMH has started using the Septic
spelling (I only noticed the other day, dunno how long they've been at it)
