Marvellous!

    Good afternoon
Following on from what I now find to be a very confusing thread, things
    are looking up.
First and foremost, I'm back on for DAS. Two full days training and an
hour before the test on Wednesday. Marvellous! Even I should be okay
on a 500 after that duration of training. Nor will I have to pay the
standard rates as 1 - they have been aweful and 2 - I'm filling
otherwise vacant slots on training that is already going ahead.
The extra time on the road also makes me a lot happier about my
competence for and after the test. It also means I should be able to
get a GS500. Oh I like them! But I have taken all the advice on board
and now have a list of possibles. Ra!
The very good news is all this enables me to cook a birthday dinner for
my SO (due to being off work for the test) and then I have a weekend to
    purchase a bike!
    Ra!

But they are rubbish. All the experts agree on this.

  3. Take someone who knows what they are looking at.

On the GS500 one thing to look at is engine mounts which crack the
    crank at the front.

Wear old clothes and look at it *very* closely. (grovelling round on
the ground a *lot*) Engine behind the forks is a good spot to look.

    Fork seals tyres and sprockets.

IIRC Tog has put a buyers guide in the FAQs.

An engine in front of the forks would certainly be a tad worrying.

Disagree strongly. Perfect depends on where and how the rider rides and
is not necessarily what was first intended.

My GS500 came to me by way of me desperately needing a couple of months
    worth of wheels.

Turns out that the bike was an absolute bargain. More so in that it
does fit extremely well into part of my requirement set for the My
Perfect Motorcycle. I didn't know this before I bought it. It started
and had road validation for a few months, which was all I needed at the
    time.

Four or five tanks later and I had discovered I had bought a bike which
fitted best part of my day to day riding needs, much more so even than
the B6 it was filling in for. Lucky me but the GS was not even on my
list of suitable bikes a thousand miles before.

  7. She's a flimsy weak girl who want's enough power for the motorway power
with low weight at an ultra budget cost. As a weakling she may drop it
which the GS will shrug off. Also easy to look after. Perfect.

    A CR500 would be perfect.

Well, when you put it like that....

Can we compromise on "nearly perfect" or better still "probably
    perfect"?

    Exactly.
I know there are better bikes, and I'll get one when I'm a better rider.

    I'm hoping too.
Sprokets? crank? Um... right... perhaps I should also invest in a
    manual.
Otherwise... yes. Engine mounts (all the big mental bits that hold it
together and keep the engine on must be solid and not held on with
sticky tape) and I've been warned about checking the down pipes and
their seals and holes in the exhaust and oil leaks and funny smells and
    rattles and electrics not working...
I'm probably going to end up with a Rat by the end of winter.
That'll be coming with me then! Marvellous!

  14. She's a girl. Flimsy and weak follow from that.

Of course there may be exceptions to this guideline and she may be one
    of them.

Perhaps some of the experts haven't ridden one, after all they wax lyrically
    about a CG125.

It's time for them to come over to the dark side. I even bet they haven't
    used an angle grinder.
