Maximum range?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Nov 11, 2006.

  1. You're in a class of two, really.

Honda ST1100 Pan European or a BMW GS with the optional 30-litre tank
(and even then, Big Tony managed to run out).

    Both will manage 250+ miles.

Can't think of anything else, off-hand.

Does anyone know which bike has the greatest range (distance between
required refuelling stops) under fairly normal driving conditions? It has
to be a trade-off between tank capacity and mpg so any guesses what is
likely to return best average figures?

The Older Gentleman fumbled, fiddled and fingered:
would'nt a CG be in the running with 100mpg and 13.5 litre tank? :)

  4. If it was the later model with that size (three-gallon tank) yes.

Oh, the shame.... Why didn't I think?

I keep seeing mentions of 100mpg , but do they actually get that in normal
    use?

GS Adventure - up to 320 miles on a tankful... The new one is supposed
to be even better on fuel.

Alternatively, an R100GS with 43l HPN tank is hard to beat. But you
surely don't want to drop that one.

I've managed 280 miles on the 955 riding at a 'sensible' pace rather
than hooning. That was a mix of mid-Wales twisties, dual carriageway &
    M4.

I read a test where they gave the predicted tank range of a Daytona like
mine as being 225 miles. I quite easily managed 180 miles once without
having to fill up, so it might be true.

  12. My early Japanese model would do over 100mpg. The OHC Honda CB125 I
owned recently would do 90-95mpg, so the answer is yes, they do.

Even Jamie's little Benly managed 88mpg on a thrash from Ramsgate to the
Chateau, a distance of some 80-odd miles.

    Cool , ta.

It strikes me as a bit of a missed marketing opportunity for Honda given all
the interest in conserving energy at the moment.
It might not be very exciting but advertising a form of transport that
genuinely does 100mpg ought to generate some sales.

  15. Agreed.

I think that little CBR125 gets about 90mpg in normal use. Most
    four-stroke 125s do.

Probably about 50ish along with the rest of the traffic coming back
along the M4 from Newport. It was dark, pissing it down, & very heavy
    traffic.

The low fuel light came on not long after Newport & I decided to try to
make it home rather than stopping to fill up. Don't ask me why - it
just seemed like a good idea at the time.

Ooh, I likes that. Bring back airships.

I'd put up with slow flights provided there was a bit more than
    high-density seating.

I wonder how well modern airships cope with adverse weather. Obviously
flight times would be sensitive to headwinds, but turbulence and high
    winds at ground level?
