May I recommend..

    A book called "The Atrocity Archive" by Charles Stross? Sci-fi meets HP
    Lovecraft-type horror meets Len Deignton (he of the spy novels fame).

    Very good[1], very recommended.

    [1] To the extent that I missed most of what happened in the two NFL
    games I watched last night because I couldn't put the book down..

    "Atrocity Archive" and "Jennifer Morgue" are in quite a different vein
    to the sci-fi novels. Still good though, I've read them all and
    enjoyed them.
