I dunno... I haven't read much HST (nor even seen "Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas", for that matter), but I don't recall coming away from much
of it thinking "tryhard self-important condescending cockspank
    wheel-reinventor".

Boris, on the other hand, is like a rank n00b who comes on here and
rails against cops, speed cameras and government as if they were the
first to have had the thought occur to them.

Boris comes across as the worlds worst wannabe tryhard though...

I've only read "fear and loathing in Las Vegas" that bike piece, and
maybe one or two short articles, but they aren't in the same galaxy let
    alone the same planet.

Boris generates antagonism because he's exactly what you would expect
the editor of Picture* magazine to be. A brainless arrogant twat.

I really like what HST wrote otoh.

I just assume he _is_ a wannabe tryhard...

    Which leaves several possibilities.

    1. He's not a wannabe tryhard but he isn't quite sane so what he writes
can be treated with a grain of salt (ergo why bother reading).

    2. He's not a wannabe tryhard, he is sane.. but is pretending to be a
wannabe tryhard (which probably means he is being paid to write like a
wanna be tryhard. And that he does such a good impersantation that it
can't be distinguished from a real wanna be tryhard. Meaning that the
output still isn't worth reading because it can't be distinguished from
    no. 1.

    3. He is a wannabe tryhard but he isn't quite sane (which means the
literary output is of lesser worth than the 2 possibilities above).

    4. He's trying to be funny... and failing miserably (which seems to be
the one you are picking). I'm still not sure where you are getting the
    laughs from though!!!

Oh you're absolutely right there, he's deliberately being provocative.
SMH does the same thing with that ratbag Devine, exactly the same
tactics - say really stupid shit in an entertaining (for some) manner.

going to like what you see)

I'm not sure that's true... I discovered BMW's at *thinks... rattle...
    clunk* umm about 30.

Smee got one in his 30's as well...

Neither of us are particuarly good arguments for 'wise' :)

I gave the issue some thought when I changed magazine subscriptions from
    AMCN to Two Wheels *shrug*

OK, let's both assume he's doing exactly what he's paid to do (seems
    likely).

I tried the turning the page thing for months... but I hate not reading
a magazine properly. And mostly I buy bike mags for the columns not the
tests anyway. So after I'd read the rest of the mag I'd end up reading
his column anyway... which lead to "arrgghhh... *sigh*... why do I read
this shit... he's just trolling anyway"

Provoking those irritated by him... yes... he provoked me into changing
my subscription from AMCN to Two Wheels when the renewal came due (where
I wasn't mildly irritated on a fortnightly basis).

Now I know that there is a school of thought that says "any publicity is
good publicity" and "if it sticks in thier minds the adverts works", but
I've always had a rule "if the add annoys me I'll go the extra mile to
    avoid that product".

Am I teaching AMCN a lesson? Nah... they couldn't care less if Boris
drives a few people away... but the question becomes... "does Boris
drive away more people than he attracts?"

And I have no idea what the answer to that is... [1]

    G-S

[1] Enjoy your Boris column Clem :)
