Measuring discs and a battery

    Well, yes.

I should point out that I've actually spent zero time on this issue so
far - I've mostly been using the 'busa anyway. And when I do all the
other work to the 10R this weekend, I shall change the battery.

I was more interested, as an intellectual exercise, *how* you could
measure when a battery is knackered. My local backstreet battery
supplier has a device with a gauge and two pointy prongs, that looks
like something from the 50s - he puts that across the terminals and
then tells me whether a battery is any good or not. I wonder what
    sort of device it is.

It will probably be an Avometer, a big old wooden multimeter, about the
size of small suitcase, like what my old dad used to have. He probably
still has it, come to think of it.

And what, pray tell, is one of those? More precisely, what is it
    measuring?

Nope, nothing like that. This looks like two 12" knife sharpeners,
arranged at a 45 degree angle, with a dial connected between them.
The user holds the handles, places the pointy ends on the battery
termninals, reads the meter. Takes about 10 seconds.

heh - don't tell me you don't do that too!

Mind you - I've just cleared out all my 'spare' and part-worn tyres on
eBay - netted nealy 200 quid! I'm looking forward to the expression
on the face of the chap behind the counter at the PO when I walk in
    with 8 tyres to post.

If you look more closely you will see that it has a wavey metal short
circuit between the prongs. It just puts a heavy load across the battery
and the meter reads the voltage under load.

The test for proving it's knackered is a receipt for the new battery to
    replace it ;-)

Go somewhere remote and stop for 5 minutes. Then start up and go home. Or
    not.
