'serious' or 'frivolous' or any other human quality, anymore than a door
can be 'honest' or a car 'weepy'.

'Une bière sérieuse' might well be used and understood, but it's no more
grammatically correct than the all too often heard atrocity, 'je serais
toi j'irais lui parler' ..

Staff and pupils displaying obvious interest and harmony is a good thing
to have as an attribute for picking schools. More or less what we did
and I have no complaints about my kid's education.

 

My father was a school governor going back as far as I can remember. He
reckoned his job had nothing to do with education but lots to do with
good old fashioned business management. Mind you his main hobby in life
was being a Chairman so his perspective is a bit different from the
ordinary rabble on the committee.

 

Wossat mean ? Don't become a governor. All you do is rubberstamp REAMS
of bullshit from the local authority education department, no governing
is involved, just going through the motions.

even thoughfully provides the required form of words for our acceptance.

Do you really seriously think you make any difference, with the targets
and missions and statements ?

Current teaching methods and curriculum don't suit the needs of all the
children. When there's a child who needs some additional help, all too
often they are branded as disruptive or "special needs". You only have
to read the standard of English used by teachers in reports to know that
the kids they teach don't stand a chance.

My science lessons (the only subjects I really did well in were
physics and chemistry) were somewhat sanitised, as I suspect is the
norm. However, I was a voracious reader of the school library's
reference section, and by age 14 I reckon I could have built a variety
of WMD-type things if given access to suitable materials.

Throwing a slightly over a pound coin-sized lump of sodium in the
school swimming pool may be a reason I never got such access, of
course.

But the "pull" in a sucking action is _always_ as I described, whether
people using the term think of it in that way or not. So either you
have to completely ban the use of the verb or accept that it actually
means "to create a lower pressure area which will be filled from a
higher-pressure area".

I was never able to visualise either, both being the sort of size
that's bigger than most gardens and sports pitches, but smaller than a
whole sports field.

Now I look out of the house and know that an acre's just a bit bigger
than the 38 are (.38 Hectare) garden.
