It's the Perseids and tonight is the high point. Excellent conditions
    - very clear across the whole sky, only a trace of high cloud. Elly's
out in the garden, the only light in the house is my monitor and she's
getting enthusiastic. She's going to get cold too, as it is 11 degrees
and falling (even if she is wrapped in her Slanket).

The sky is full of little white streaks

In the heart of rural Bedfordshire, mate. Not much light pollution
round 'ere as the lamplighter's on 'oliday.

Better than round 'ere then: two FGB sodium vapour security lamps out
the back, and Canary Wharf out the front.

I doubt I'd see one even if it landed in the garden.

good view here[1] in S Wales, near Abergavenny looking towards Hereford.
Got bored after 10 mins, did a Rooney on the privet and came back inside.

[1] once I realised the best show was obscured by the neighbour's apple
tree and I moved a few feet

    # If you chumps had any idea what the meteor shower REALLY is, you
wouldn't all be outdoors staring at the sky later on.

    # The Big Man has started cranking up the meteor machine....

    # ...as the gall stones of thousands of dead celebs are poured into the
meteor machine, one giant sack after another....

    # There's a whole sack gone into the machine just from Bernard Manning
    alone...

    # The meteor machine is ON. It's spitting the gall stones out now
like tennis balls and you lot should see them in about an hour or so.
    Enjoy.

You need to move your arse up here then, my boy. Peaceful rurality,
innit. I've just been out for a fag and it has cleared again and the
Milky Way is visible even to my rheumy old eye, it's so dark.

Should I be galled that I didn't think of that first?

A blanket with arm-holes and sleeves so you can wrap yourself up in it
but still nurse a mug of cocoa or a joint.

It was mentioned here before last Christmas, so I got her one. A
blanket with sleeves, made from a fleece/microfibre material. As warm
    as a warm thing.

It's not for the want of trying. I imagine house-hunting will shift up
a gear after our holidays. RBR's been written off for 2010.

    What's your nearest station?
Next week I shall be experiencing rurality on a level that makes yours
    seems like downtown NYC.

Oh, and re-puttying every fucking window in the house.

Indeed. Got Linda one, and her sis was so impressed I was allowed to
    buy her one too.

I'm a right lucky so and so, sometimes.

Coo. That's serious. I won't be the only one to miss the tales of
    your travels.
Flitwick - or as the locals call it, Fliddick. This makes them Flids,
of course. We're well-served with stations, mind - there's three lines
through Beds, but I expect you know that already. Serious commuter
    turf, this is.
Aye, well, France is a big country with not so many people living in
    it. Innit. Lovely.
That'll be nice for you, dear. Think of cricket bats as the stink of
    linseed oil overcomes you.

Pretty much, although it is open at the back, so to speak, being a flat
blanket with the addition of sleeves. Could do with a hood for
    comet-watching purposes, I understand.
