Putty? Wasn't your gaff thrown together in the late 80s? Thought
they'd stopped using it by then, on new builds...

There was definitely no putty used in the hardwood windows I put in,
when I was renovating my first place, in 1984.

There's a few windows in that place, mind. How long are you going for?

 

Much Japanese style walking with small steps and backing away to walls,

Quite. The difficult bit is not to make it obvious what you're doing.

 

No reason not to use putty on new hardwood windows, it's just fiddly to
get the detailing right so that water doesn't sit around the bottom of
the units and destroy the bottom seal leading to fogging.
