27-year-old Bakersfield man whom officials say caused a five-car
accident Saturday while speeding and under the influence of drugs was
in fair condition at Kern Medical Center Sunday.

Brandon Cortez will be booked into county jail when he is released
from the hospital, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Cortez was driving a Honda Accord at about 70 m.p.h. eastbound on
Niles Street when he rear-ended a car stopped at a red light at
Descanso Street, creating a chain reaction that ultimately involved
four other vehicles and seven other people.

Cortez's passenger, Moon Cortez, a 26-year-old Bakersfield man, was
also taken to Kern Medical Center and was in fair condition Sunday, a
    nursing supervisor said.

Two other Bakersfield men involved in the accident received minor
injuries: Alejandro Marin, 22, and Tommy Dowell, 56.

The rest -- Bakersfield residents German Rosas, 40, Ignacio Marin,
    68,
and Angel Garza, 21, and Arizona resident Sergio Marin, 47 -- were
    uninjured.

Brandon Cortez was arrested on suspicion of a felony charge of
    causing
injuries while driving under the influence of drugs and a separate
charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Online court records show Brandon Cortez, whose aliases include the
name "Silent," has had several brushes with the law in recent years,
including prior jail time for assault, drug possession and a DUI.
