Too much traffic, too many camera, but well worth it from a 1st time
experience, you may get piped over the boarder :)
    Oh yes

I recommend the A939 to Tomintul (over Cock Bridge)

Aye, not a bad run for a weekend.

YTC#1 took a blunt brush and painted...
Thurso, A836, A838, A894. Well, just about any road round there. Love them
    all.

I've had to pull over just after that stretch when the guy running
    behind be waved me over.
The distance between us was such that we were both getting airborne at
the same time on consecutive rises and he was laughing too hard to
    continue :)

  5. When it's not pissing with rain or the midges aren't active, agreed. So
maybe three days in a year.

I thought the same, there's a couple of cameras located between Carter Bar
and Jedburgh, one just after an irresistible long downhill straight levels
out. Past Jedburgh and the right-hander for Kelso there's probably another
half dozen cameras along a ten-mile stretch as far as Earlston, though
they might all be empty boxes or forward-facing ;-). Possible
    alternatives to reach the Forth Bridge are notably the A1 or the A7;
there's a shortcut immediately after Carter Bar, the A6088 that's useful
and pleasant/thrilling enough on a bike, but watch for logging artics on
near single track parts, it's probably no quicker than carrying on a
little bit further along the A68 through Jedburgh and heading for Hawick
via Denholm on the A698 and thence up the same A7 stretch. All in though
the A68 has less small village 30mph parts than the A7, but is a bit
monotonous and visits none of the larger Borders towns such as Selkirk and
    Galashiels.

What's best all depends on the pace you want to set. The proximity of the
Forth Bridge, when the A1, A7 or A68 converge at Edinburgh is no reason to
make the A9 the start point for the northward hike and you could as well
head directly west by M8 instead in that narrowed central belt.

Once through Glasgow by whatever means you'd be heading up the West Coast
on the A82. North of Loch Lomond and beyond would be the area in which
you might want to have relatively unlimited time and keep further east
and the A9 for the more utilitarian 'commute' south and homewards
much later. Going southwards on the A82 is a waste of much of the scenic
splendour if that's what you seek, as once you get going there's just an
unstoppable urge and much grin-factor which makes it difficult not to let
up till you're bowling past Loch Lomond and soon at the Clyde at which
point you'll probably wish you could turn around and do it all over again
if circumstances and schedule would only permit.

    In short: Go West!
