Oh, I dunno. My Volvo had electric memory seats, they were really cool, as
it prevented the usual fidling to get comfortable after SWMBO had driven it.
My Jag had 'em too, and also, when you switched it off the steeing column
moved the wheel closer to the dashboard, which was great if I was out and
about and had stopped to eat / drink / read a paper or whatever.
Unfortunately with the Jag, it defaulted automatically to the last memory
setting when next switched on, so if I got in it after her indoors had
driven it I got a bit impaled as the steering wheel came out at full stretch
as the seat rose majestically towards it.

My VW has heated lether seats (akkshirley, so did the Volvo). These sound
like a complete waste of time but are really quite worth having on a cold
    winter's morning.

The Volvo and the Jag had cruise control, again, I never thought that was
worth having until I had a car so equipped, it fucking rocks.

The 80s SAAB 900s I've had come equipped with those as standard. As you
    say jolly good things.

I'll be after another 96 (or 95) in a few months. The early Captain
Scarlet type not the recent GM one.

Isn't that the one with the V4 engine?

How much did Orange pay you to give up ED50?

I'm just thinking back a few weeks to when I cancelled my contract
because there were deals on offer that suited me much better and I
    picked up loads of flak.

They originally had two strokes but were replaced with a Ford sourced V4.

Still kept the freewheel though. Originally to iron out the hunting from
the two stroke on the overrun but allowed coasting and clutchless changes.

I tended to forgot to press the clutch when coming to a stand at a
    junction. Arse.

I have always quite liked the look of the old SAABs, and Volvo Amazons,
    particularly the 3 door 123GT.

    Their proportions just seem right.

When I was a teenager such devices were very cheap and still fairly
available, as were MK2 Jags. Insurance was easier for youngsters then too,
having only 7 insurance groups was a good thing.

I've fitted the heater pads, relays and switches from Volvo 340s into
Mini seats in the past. They do indeed rock. You could get the whole
kit from a breakers yard for about a tenner.

MK2 Jags were unbelieveably cheap round here. You could get a decent
3.8 MOD for less than 200 quid.

Indeed, I nearly bought one when I was 19, but my old man refused to let me
park it on the bloody driveway, so I bought an MG instead (big, big regret
    of my life that was).

How about a beautiful E-Type 4.2 FHC, 2 careful owners, no rust for 350
quid? I was offered it by my mum's neighbour when I was 17 and just
passed my test. I turned it down in favour of a Mini Cooper S 1071
because the insurance was lots cheaper.

I was offered a good Mk3 Super Snipe that was only a few hundred pounds
(I can't remember how much exactly but I could afford it). I turned it
down simply because one of the Guards told me I wouldn't have been able
to keep it in petrol on my wages.

He was probably right but I regret it.

I wouldn't wait with baited breath as I'm not convinced you're going to like
it coming from a 6310. I love my 6230 because it's fairly simple, easy to
use etc- its also a tad smaller than the 6310i. I got a 750i as a free
upgrade a few weeks ago, but found it far too fiddly [1]. Still, if you
don't like it, do what I did and sell it on ebay. People will pay a small
    fortune for one.

[1] To be fair, the camera looked great, but I've never had to used the
    camera on my current Nokia.

eh, they binned that system years ago, didn't they. The auto wiper thing is
much easier. It does make you incredibly laxzy though. I drove my mum's car
the other day in intermittent rain and kept forgetting to switch wipers
    off/on etc.

I tend to find that if a gadget is fitted then I will tend to use it -
at first any way. But I don't usually miss them if they're not fitted.
In my limited experience of Italian electrics: absolutely!

    So that's why he's buying an M5 then? I think that's just Clarkson's style,
    as you well know.

Anyway, you're right, they have learnt some lessons. The newest version of
the I-drive is in the new 3 series. The 330i BMW gave me for a weekend was
very easy to use, and in the end, probably much better than lots of separate
controls. It is actually quite an elegant solution once you spend more than
    5 mins with it.

  19. When I were nobbut a lad, I would regularly haul my dad's golf-clubs round
the courses of SE England for a few extra groats. One of his delightful,
even older, chums had a small collection of tasty cars. He regularly said
that he was leaving me his Aston DB5 in his will. Gorgeous it was despite
being a deep-plum colour; lovingly - obsessively - fettled, the pride of his
fleet and residing in his heated garage. I was fond of him anyway, a
larger-than-life man with an endless fund of anecdotes, but the prospect of
    that car ...

    Guess what, he didn't!

My first, and only, experience of a vehicle with cruise control was 20
years ago in a merkin transit type thing on roads much less crowded than
they are today. Given that I doubt I ever did more than 1/2 a mile
without having to turn the damn thing off or readjust it to suit traffic
speeds I consider them a total waste of money to transport around in
this tiny little land. Nice idea for a day chugging across the open
range at a steady 55 though.
