It's simply staggering how blinkered your thinking is. 10 years ago, climate
control was a luxury. Air con still does not come in all cars as standard,
let alone climtae control. I expect in 10 years time, you will say that
xenon lights, auto wipers, auto dimming rear view mirros, infra red
detectors to see the road ahead, parking sensors etc etc are all fine to
    have.

Just take a look at some of the gadgets on the new S class merc. Today's
luxury will be commonplace in 10 years time.

  2. Not surprising; such promises get forgotten with the advent of senility
    or grasping relatives.

A friend of mine had an ageing relly who'd been a general dealer for
years and over the decades had bought large old cars cos they were
cheap. He lived in an old farmhouse with cowsheds around it and all
those cowsheds were filled with the old motors he'd owned. Never threw
anything away, especially when he had the space to store them.

One evening my mate and I went up for a bevvy at the old boys's place
and he told us to have a wander around the sheds... old Lanchesters,
Rollers, Alvises, Armstrong-Siddleys, MkII Jags by the bucketload, one
or two E-types, 30s and 40s Humbers and Austins were ten a penny, and
the piece de resistance for me was a D-type.

All covered in pigeon shit and on rotting tyres.

When he croaked it, the rellys just sold the lot for scrap; the shower
    of bastards.

    Grimly Curmudgeon says...
I did a bit of kitchen fitting with a mate back in 1983. We got a job
Radwell Grange Farm Baldock, which is a Grade 2 listed building. In the
yard was a courtyard walled up between 2 barns and in there were about
15 very old and restorable proper classic cars. A Jowett Javelin, MK2
Jag, a Lotus Cortina MK1 and a Mini Cooper S to name a few.

The new owner of the property had a scrap firm come along and Hyab the
lot onto trucks for disposal. I nearly cried as they loaded what looked
like a very solid bodied S-Type Jag on top of the Lotus Cortina. Cunts
    like that should be shot.

  4. To some folk, they were just old stinky motors. Trouble is now, that
every fucker thinks every old stinky motor is a 'classic' and worth a
lorra money. Those of us with a feel for the past like to get old stinky
motors cheap and just drive them for the fun of it.

With the benefit of hindsight, I'd have leapt in and grabbed one or two
of that old bloke's - going to the crusher anyway and if I'd known their
fate I'd have been up there.

Trouble is, back then, they were just some worthless old bangers.

If someone was to be trailering away a mid 80s XJ40 with an Escort RS
Turbo balanced on it's roof, would you stop them?

    wisdom:
Rattler's not mass produced. I mean yes, they do make a lot of it but
not in the same way as Strongbow or Scrumpy Jack.

Yes, I see your point. Strongbow is a bit naff :)

  8. Indeed not; I'm wave them merrily on their way. Wairra minute, the XJ40
is the one with the lovely ally block straight six, innit? I'd blag the
    engine then let them go.

Exactly - but in 20 years time people will say it was mad to scrap 'em.

Exactly the same as the S-Type and Cortina in Lozzo's post.

  10. What you're left with after starting a season's bike racing with a
    larger fortune.

Mine went for a but under £200, that was with the free car charger Vodafone
gave with it. Mind ewe, mine was unlocked as standard. An Orange one might
be worth less cos it needs unlocking before it can be used on other networs.
Still expect it to go for more than £150.

I like the extra light from a sunroof.

If he does, he'll be *20* years behind the times; my mate Dave's first
    M3 - a 1995 model - had auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

I always thought that was the point of a sunroof, to let the sun in, not
    provide cooling.

    Same here.

Only Renault seem to include a sunroof with AC as standard (or at least they
    used to).

Both my recent VW's have not had sunroofs.

  16. For less than half that, I'd have come over and made vrrooom noises in
your ear, lobbed your bike down the road for you and drenched you with
    buckets of water.

You, mate, are a diamond. I would think that Champ is kicking himself
now. Less than half, eh? Blimey.

"more than just a newsgroup" indeed.

My car (an early model Peugeot 106) is a box. It has 4 wheels, and an
engine which appears to be connected to 2 of them. It has a
radio/cassette (which, although being the factory fitment I bought off
eBay for a fiver, and has a bad habit of eating tapes) and an absolute
bare minimum of luxuries - no central locking, no adjustable steering
column. It gets me from A to B in some comfort, but in a rather bland
manner. Its engine has a smaller displacement than that of my bike
(Bandit 1200), and a power output more closely resembling that of my
old bike (Bandit 600). If it wasn't infinitely more convenient for me
to have a car than not, I wouldn't.

    Well that's the gross-o-meter pegged-out, then.

    So, has it arrived, yet?
