  1. <heh!> I knew that, but wondered how good your Aussie slang really was.

[Interestingly, Chambers specifies it as Australian but Macquarie doesn't.]

I didn't even realise it was aussie!
Do you use Macquarie online - I can't seem to find it.

  3. I didn't really think it was, but Chambers did.
No, I've got a First Edtion in the office. It used to be
available online but not any more -- you seem only to be able to get the
slang dictionary online for free now. There was an digital version that I
downloaded as a trial and nearly plonked down the $50 for, earlier this
year I think, but it ended up being too intrusive so I decided against it.
I've nearly always got my laptop with me and it has a CD version of
Chambers (admittedly two editions behind the dead-tree version now).

  5. Well yes but I'm equally amazed that people can find a use for all the
features that are included on phones. I can't work out whether the
gizmos are genuinely useful and therefore fulfill a marketable need or
whether they are products chasing a non existent market.

*Excellent*. Anyone who uses a speaker phone (or radio) in a public
place is an ignorant ****. As I remarked (loudly) to my colleague on a
train last week. Just before the bloke next to us went off speaker
    phone, as it happens.

    Funny that.

Don't forget people who wear bluetooth headsets while not taking a

Bluetooth headsets. Designed to comfortably sit in/on your ear. Of
course if you take them off, stuff them in your pocket, someone calls
you, you use the phone and its pretty bloody pointless buying one in
    the first place.

I've got one and I wear it in the car, and sometimes round the house
when I'm expecting a call and I'm busy - means I can answer the call
and carry on doing what I was doing (carrying shit loads of stuff
around with both hands last time). If I'm in the car and I fill up or
nip into a shop to buy a pack of fags/mars bar/coke I can't be arsed to
take it off because some **** still thinks they're a yuppie icon and
    resents someone wearing them.

Once I get to where I'm driving to or finish working and don't need to
wear it, I'll take it off of course, simply because bluetooth drains
battery power. I've no doubt there's people who wear them all day at
work, they can talk and beat up a keyboard at the same time :)

I do feel, though, that it's a market driven by the features, and the
perception of "I must have that" rather than one where most users have
a set of requirements that they search for. Still a market, of course,
    but kinda arse-about-face, IYAM.

My _needs_ in a phone are simple - it should work well as a phone and
SMS message device, with good usable phone-book and text functions.
Having an on-board camera is very much "nice to have" and, for me,
    anything else is completely superfluous.

True, but they're still all based around making the transportation
element better/more relaxing/more fun etc. etc. Some of the features
on phones are now the equivalent of equipping a car with a gym, sauna
    and swimming pool.
