Modern Yamaha Tenere

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Feb 7, 2009.

  1. I am sorely, sorely tempted....

BMW F650GS (the single) also appeals, but it's pricey....

Nobody else seems to make anything similar, insofar as I really fancy
    another big single dirt bike.

If I could justify the price, I'd have one of those tomorrow.

MZ Mastiff or Baghira might be worth a look.

  8. Nah.

Oddly, actually, I'm also pondering a Triumph Scrambler.

let the tyres down. That should lower it by an inch or two. :)

Dunno about the 800 but but I lowered a 650 easily for the SO with a
    Koubalink (http://koubalink.com/).

The bloke was really helpful via email, not expensive & did exactly what
it said on the tin. Could be worth contacting him.

Concerning those two bikes, the new Tenere when seen side to side to an
F800GS looks like its mini-me. I'd go Tenere if riding solo both on and
off-road and consider having to pull it off the ground regularly. F800GS for
riding two-up and/or long motorway distances.

  13. I'd agree with that. I wouldn't contemplate using the Ten for two-up
work: I've got the K for that.

I just like Yamaha thumpers, that's all. I've owned an SR500, two
XT600Es, and now the old model 660 Tenere, and I want another one.

I reckon Yamaha build the best big singles of any of the big Jap Four,
but then I suppoe they've been doing it longest, so they should.

The Dominatoristi may discuss that. And the long life of the XR series [1]
    is another source for discussion.

Oh, yes, KTM are southern Huns.

[1] Which didn't get improved for years as it wasn't needed [2]
[2] Considering their buyers (me included) are kickstart gods.

people i've spoken to who have ridden both the f650gs and the old pegaso
reckoned that the pegaso was a lot more fun and there was little
    difference in reliability.

don't know about the newer pegaso strada thing though, it seems to be a
    slightly different kettle of fish.

I rode both the GS and CS variations of F650 back around 00/01.
I found it to be a rather underwhelming experience. Felt similar
to riding a 12bhp 125, throttle constantly on the stop. Handled
nicely enough (both variants), it's just the motor was insipid,
    underpowered and sluggish.

He's right: I rode the Scarver variant a few years ago, and even I found it
    slow.
