  5. *Love* the bit of the bloke reading the map in his lap, at zero feet,
    before doing a slow roll.

I'll never complain about people with maps in their lap on the M25
    again.

  10. They used to foam the runway at Filton before a crash landing. Less
    sparks...

They're Aussies. They simply don't GAF.
Mind ewe, the 111s are built so bloody solidly that I'll bet it was back in
the air in a week or two.

  12. We spent a bit of time in the cockpit of a BA 747 a few years back. They had
an inflatable globe of the world......

  13. Could well be; he recalls the video, but says he could have misrecalled the
    country.

Beech Staggerwing. To convince potential buyers that the new-fangled
retractable undercarriage didn't mean certain doom, the manufacturer (IIRC)
would run a demonstration at airshows, where the plane was landed gear-up,
engine stopped, on the grass, then winched off the ground to allow the gear
to be dropped. Then it would take off and do the whole thing again. And
    again.

    darsy tossed off:
We used to have them stationed nearby at Upper Heyford.

Bits were always falling off them, and I can recall 2 local crashes,
not to mention dumping of fuel whilst airborne over the local villages
in the height of barbecue season.

    The Older Gentleman tossed off:
    It gets better.

They changed the direction of take of and landing, so the planes were
taking off right across the villages in the valley.

The residents complained to the base, who advised that the reason for
changing the take off direction was because of the age of the planes,
and the inexperience of the pilots.
