To convince potential buyers that the new-fangled retractable undercarriage didn't mean certain doom, the manufacturer (IIRC) would run a demonstration at airshows, where the plane was landed gear-up, engine stopped, on the grass, then winched off the ground to allow the gear to be dropped. Then it would take off and do the whole thing again. And again.

The Older Gentleman tossed off: It gets better. They changed the direction of take of and landing, so the planes were taking off right across the villages in the valley.
