Firstly, I do know where all the wires go.

Secondly, is there a quick way to get a computer up and running with a virus
scanner, and a decent firewall without hooking it up to the net? Options
that include going to a shop and buying some boxed software don't really
count, as I'm not driving for an hour to go and buy a box virus scanning
firewall when I can download it cheaper off the web.

Thirdly, is there a simple way to transfer all my settings off this PC to
the other? Stuff like de-xping the start menu etc.

Frankly you could have done it in the time it took to write the post and
    wait for the response, but...

PC Pro mag will have AVG and probably a firewall on the cover disc.

And the files and settings transfer wizard will do the other.

Yebbut what if I want a proper AV and firewall setup. Say Kaspersky?
Ooh. I find it strange how I never hear about the actual useful features of
    XP...

You want to get software onto your machine without downloading it from
the net or going out to buy some?

FWIW, if you're behind an ADSL router then I'd be very surprised if you
pick anything up. Just google for AVG/Avast/sophos/whatever and have
    done with it.

Doki please let me know where you live. Someone at the EoSM may be
passing close to you and I can give him/her the print server to deliver.
BTW I found and tested it today and it works perfectly. Having read this
thread I have also downloaded the software and burned a CD for you!

Jesus fucking christ. Where do you get off being helpful? I live off J29 of
the M1, and work all over the shop.

Isn't there a time limited AV program bundled with the mbd disk ?

There is. I'm not a satanist though so I left it enabled long enough to
purchase Avira then swapped to that. Which is a bit like swapping the
treacle in your swimming pool for water. I was under the impression that the
Vostro was a PC without all the Dell branded guff bundled alongside. It
appears that it isn't, or I forgot to tick a box.

  12. You would be surprised.. seeing as quite a few websites have trojans
embedded in their pages and using things like MSN can leave you very
    vulnerable..

Google and Avast's sites didn't, so I think I'll sleep soundly having
    used the above method.
