"Organised" religions are rather fond of trying to tell everyone what to do
and how to live their lives. What to say and what you are allowed to think.

ITYF that it's actually interpreted about doing work and making light.
There are plenty of people (AIUI) in Israel that are paid / pay to turn
    on lights on the Sabbath.

Frankly this sounds like bollocks in any case.

I find that I end up telling the representatives of organised religions
where to go and what to do when they get there.

Before I start, this is not a defence of these idiots and I am a
    Secular Humanist - Atheist.

However the article does say 'Orthodox' Jews, which are the more
strict version and believe everything in the Torah. A lot of jews,
including a lot of those in Israel, have a more 'pragmatic' view of
    their religion.

As with all religions, some people take it more seriously than others
and some even have their own interpretations.

This reminds of a sequence from a Red Dwarf episode:

Rimmer: I never agreed with my parents' religion but I wouldn't dream
    of knocking it.
    Lister: What were they?
Rimmer: Seventh Day Advent Hoppists. They believed that every Sunday
should be spent hopping. They would hop to church, hop through the
service and hop back home again.
Lister: What's the idea behind that then?
Rimmer: Well, they took the Bible literally. Adam and Eve, the snake
and the apple, everything. Took it word for word. Unfortunately their
version had a misprint. It was all based on 1 Corinthians 13, where it
says "faith, hop and charity, and the greatest of these is hop." So
that's what they did every seventh day. I tell you, Sunday lunchtimes
were a nightmare. Hopping around the table serving soup. We all had to
    wear sou'esters and asbestos underwear.

Of course. My point was more aimed at 'this is BS' than anything else.

    A great episode.

  12. That odd definition of 'work' that Des mentioned, I suppose.
If they're not supposed to be doing anything or causing anything to be
done during religious holidays anyway, it strikes me as odd that they'd
be happy enough coming and going during the holiday in the first place.
If they're in the flat and living like hermits, as they should be, the
lights won't be getting switched on by their movements.

Oh don't get me started! I distinctly remember at a friends funeral
the Catholic priest saying "Don't worry about the big things in life,
the church will do that for you. You just woryy about the little
things" or words very much like that. I would have walked out except
it would have offended a lot of very dear friends.

    Indeed.

I think it was you who suggested elsewhere that there was a good
chance we could be 'overtaken' by the Muslims [1] if we aren't
careful? Someone I know is quite high up in the CoE (on the committees
etc) suggested the same and that it was our religious apathy that
    would allow it to happen?

I think it's more down to PC going WAY to far and an fake / false over
    tolerance in general.

Try standing up in Muslimia [1]and shouting some of the things they
(the fanatics probably) do over here and see how long you last.

To me being 'a citizen' means complementing and enhancing what is here
already, not fighting to change or overthrow it?
