Yesterday I saw something odd: a Porsche Boxster witha top box on its
    boot/engine cover/whatever.

It was about the size of a slightly flattish bike one, and had a "high
level" brake light built in. It was too shallow for a wheel, unless it
was for a space-saver wheel, and was a bit square anyway.

So what the hell was it?

Exactly what you thought it was, I reckon. Boxters aren't exactly gifted
with a large boot, so it was probably some kind of luggage box as seen
    on 60s sports cars.

They have a lot more boot space than a 911, can get a decent size case
in both ends. Beer Fridge I reckon
