  1. Seeing as the sun gods are treating us well, and the longest day has
recently passed, well... I think it would be rude not to !

    Anyone up for it ?

To be honest, I can't recall the last time I had time off work and this

Gosh. You kept that a little quiet.

But it now appears that you own three BMWs. While owning one could be
    seen as unfortunate...

I guess there might be a hint of yellow in there from certain angles.

I have to admit that I've always liked that colour and have fancied a
Dakar/Ferro RR since they came out. I'm starting to think that it's not
as universally loved by the wider BMW buying public as it turns out this
one was sat around for over a year between being made and someone liking
it enough to take it home.
The RT doesn't quite work for me ergonomically, which is a shame as it's
    clearly a more usable bike.

I'll need to give the bike it's annual service pretty soon and am going
through the "HOW MUCH????, WHAT EVERY YEAR???? FFS!!!" stage at the
    moment.

The BMW service schedule is fucked up. When I was doing over 6k a year on
the GS I never bothered with the annual schedule. Brake fluid every other
year is all I did. The rest of it seems to duplicate what is in the other
shcedules. Nothing but a money making scam for dealers.

Are you doing your own servicing? If not, then there is a really good
independent in Cardiff. In the last couple of years I have just thrown the
bike at this chap and said "service it". Bills have been very reasonable.

If you are, then I have access to one of those GS911 gadgets that lets you
read the engine & (if fitted) the ABS2 diagnostics. It seems to have
recalibrated the ABS controller on my bike so that it all works again.
Previously, clearing the fault by earthing the test pin ended up with the
    fault reappearing shortly after.

It certainly needs careful management to understand what needs doing and
    when.
I'm expecting to do a mix of me and an independent. Timo has suggested
someone near London (BGM) that would be fairly convenient and I'm
    already making contact.
That sounds rather useful and I'll bear that in mind, though I believe
the ABS on mine is the integral one so probably needs a different
    computer. :-(

BTW, for reference, Park Lane/Battersea BMW quoted me £195 today to
change the brake fluid. I didn't take them up on it.

The gadget will talk to a variety of K & R series bikes. The thing was
designed by a chap from South Africa where BMW dealers are rather scarce.
It even copes with canbus variants.
http://www.hexcode.co.za/ - mine is the non-bluetooth job, so you need a
    laptop with a USB port.

I'm pretty sure iABS is on the list of options in the software.
    <checks invoice from http://www.cardiffmotorrad.com/>

    1. supply & fit alternator belt £22.21
    2. 36k service (major) £152 - May 2007
    3. minor service; brake fluid change; pair of Conti Road Attacks. £256.85.
Yes, price includes the tyres at £147.50, so just over £100 for oil &
filter change, brakes & balancing the throttle bodies. April 2008

At those prices I simply cannot be arsed and it would seem Park Lane are
taking the piss. For 3 above, Mike charged for 1.5 hours labour at £35 per
hour. I think the brake fluid change took him about 45 minutes, as you need
to take the tank off to bleed the ABS module.

I usually sit there and chat about touring Europe. He is very thorough and
every now and then either he or his dad, in the classic car workshop next
door, throws a mug of coffee & a biscuit in your direction. I think he has
a loan bike now, or there is a train station on the end of the road.

You need a login to be able to download the software & drivers but I have
    that.

With new models & faults appearing all the time the Hexcoders seem to be
coming up with new software releases every few weeks. When the ABS fault
appeared on my bike about 2 years ago they hadn't cracked ABS2 but I
noticed a new release earlier this year and hey presto, ABS now working. I
bet a BMW dealer would've said, "you need a new ABS module, that's £1200
    please."
