Today I was riding home from the city (Melbourne) along the Calder when I
    noticed
all the cars starting to backed up which isn't unusual in peak hour. Anyway
    I started
lanespliting finally getting to the front only to find a car accident, 2
    cars had crash
because the car behind wasn't obviously watching the road when the front
    slowed down.

What I found very surprising was here was 2 guys trying in vain to push the
car off the road but getting nowhere while all these people just sat in
their cars just watching them get nowhere, or trying to drive dangerously
    around them

I promptly pulled over parking my bike in the emergency lane and helped the
two guys get the car off the road. First time I tried I stood in some
brake fluid and landed on my face, luckily full leathers on :). Then tried
again without the oil under foot and eventually got the car off the road.

I find this whole situation hard to understand being from the country and
this is not the first time I have seen this sort of thing happen in the
    city.

I would help anyone out in a bad situation not because I'm nice but because
I would want the same done for me.

Is it just car drivers or is it just the way people are down here?

Well this morning there was a rider on a red f650 on the monash who came
off somehow though by the way he tore through traffic erratically I can
    imagine.
Anyway he was picking up his bike and the car drivers around actually
used their cars to block oncoming traffic to allow this person to pick
up his bike and get it out of harm's way.
Another driver and rider were helping the person out when I rode past.
He was going way too fast splitting through moving traffic and wobbling
    past cars.
I held my breath as he passed a semi at one stage.
At least he wasn't seriously hurt.

I think what you saw was an exception because people generally do come
    to other's aid.

It's because blake fluid stays slippery in the city. In the country it just
    soaks into the dust.

the other week saw 2 cages that had a minor bingle , on a main road that is
2 lanes , they blocked the lanes whilst they exchanged details instead of
driving the 30 metres to get out of the way of the peak hour traffic

    idiots

Lucky him, when I was a learner I droped my 250 in the wet the first time I
rode in the wet. Picking up my bike I had some dickhead Asian charge at me
with his car. I basically had to run with my bike off the road. The car hit
my mirror that came off my bike smashing it in to a million bits

Happened to me when i mwas a learner a guy decided he would go straight
    from the turning lane.
I had to avoid him and came off (no damage to me or bike luckily. After
i picked up bike he was waiting for me)
Anyways we had a cordial talk and went our separate ways.
No need for any animosity as he knew he done wrong and apologised profusely.

I was in an almost pile-up on the Gold-Coast highway once when the person
behind me wasn't paying attention and almost Liberace'd me. I WAS paying
attention though and I jumped up onto the traffic island as he came past
all locked up with smoke billowing!
The topper though was when the traffic started moving again and the ****
    wouldn't let me back in!

True but there's no prize for being stuck on the traffic-island in the
middle of the 100kph Gold-Coast highway on a busy day either!!

No, most people slip in brake fluid.

It's just Melbourne for you. I once ran out of petrol (bleep bleep old
holden panelvan fuel gauge) on the way to work. In the middle of a 1 lane
each way bridge in peak hour close to the inner city and nobody at all
helped me push it off at all but plenty of them abused me.

Whereas here in Brissie everytime I have seen someone in that situation
there has always been others willing to help (sometimes even me! LOL)
