You blokes are triffic! You know all the good stuff :)

Nah, my bike's stock-standard.... haven't modified anything apart from the
handlebars (had them shortened coz they were too wide for my bloody Oompah
Loompah arms <grin>.... Greg at Dahlitz in Queanbehole managed to take about
1.5cm off each side - and while it doesn't sound like much, it's made a heck
of a diff to my comfort levels!

For a while now I've been contemplating getting a new bike when I go onto my
full licence (on Friday of THIS WEEK!!!), so haven't really bothered about
the quirks of the GS - but after looking carefully at my finances etc (boo
hiss!) I think I will just hang onto my lovely Gus for a while yet.....
bugger trying to minimise his mileage to get a better trade-in.....

So....seeing as I will be hanging onto him it looks like customising various
bits to make him a better fit for me will now be the go.....

BTH, I'll have another go at the centrestand thing with Bruce when I take
the bike in for its service on Thursday - but I can't imagine that much has
changed since the last time I tried. You know, it would probably be a good
thing if I had a go at getting Other Peoples' bikes onto their centrestands,
to see whether mine is particularly ornery.... Gosh, let's have a
centrestand BBQ at my house!!!! Bring your bikes!!!!!

(Actually, I see a plan forming.... let me hold that thought- any other
Canberran ausmotians game to let me have a go at their centrestands????)

No I didn't BT (And I don't have the R1100 GS anymore anyway).
Here's a thought though; Betty might have!

I recall the kwak GT750 being harder to get OFF the centre stand than
it was to get it on.

And bugger about the trump and the back. Hope both get well soon.

    cheers, Bill

Silly me - I'd kind of compartmentalised stuff in my head..... "This is
about going to the track and watching the races and getting back in one
    piece".

You know what, Clem? This first trip to the Island was so bloody valuable -
I learned SOOOO MUCH! Thanks heaps!

Thanks Bill; I'm getting better by the day.
Funny enough the WORST bit is getting up out of bed.
Sadly; I have to do this 4 or 5 times a night and I just can't work out a
technique that doesn't cause bolts of pure agony!!
The rest of the day is just remembering to not bend and trying not to laugh
    or cough.....

I got an extra week off work so I'm catching up on movies. (Idiocrasy is
highly recommended and Thank You For Smoking is pretty good too)

I can't imagine that you really learnt anything from me Betty ('cept p'raps
"what a good bloke Rockit is" and "never trust a man who says he's good with
directions or he's got plenty of petrol left"...) but if it's true then
you're most, most welcome. (and most welcome to repeat the exercise next
    year)

    Things Betty's learnt:
Not to trust men named Clem.
It is possible to sleep wearing earplugs.
You cannot wear too many jumpers at Phillip Island.
It's possible to get sunburn and frostbite at the same time.
Old bikies are funny when they're drinking together; but not nearly as funny
    as they THINK they are!

nearly 100kg! pffft, petite that's what that is :))

I wasn't trying to infer that Betty or anyone was doing it all wrong,
merely passing on observations from watching/showing others.

Just out of curiosity, does M Guzzi have any solutions - you said
yourself that your other bikes weren't a problem - maybe they can re-
engineer the stand to be more user friendly?

Not strictly true - more correct to say "Not to expect men called Clem to
provide any kind of concrete plans or details for a trip they've done a
    million times."
Apparently (poor Howard had a sleepless night when he forgot his earplugs, I
believe! <snigger>) I do recall waking in my lovely bungalow in the wee
hours on Sunday, and hearing the low growl of ClemSounds from next door...
and as I drifted back into sleep I recall thinking "oh poor Howard and Leon,
I do hope they have earplugs!"
    Amen! Amen! Amen!
Double triple quadruple Amen! Years ago when I was in my late 20s I spent
about 8 months trying to get a sensible 15 minutes a day tan - it was
brilliant till a week of wet weather, 8months later, reduced my golden tan
to a dirty smudgy look. Two days at PI was enough to do the same to me -
despite having one half of my face frozen off, what remained got a new batch
of freckles and tan that promptly turned to "dirty unwashed" colour the
instant I got off the Island!
Oh no, you were all pretty bloody funny!

Hee hee hee, in fact, you were all great! I'm really looking forward to next
    year already!

The stand is from the Aprilia parts bin. I have no idea why they
didn't use the roll on stand. Possible clearance issues, who knows?

Well, I can hoist the bike off the side stand, balance it with my left
hand, while finagling the race stand with my right....

Yeah, OK it is really a question of balance... and confidence....
and, only when you run out of balance, and/or confidence does strength
    come in.

While I can do it, well, so far so good, it didn't seem a helpful
    suggestion for betty...

here, stand at the back of the bike and balance it with one hand, while
    ...etc.

When I had the GT750, I mostly used the side stand, but, when I wanted
it up on the centre stand, I had a wee bit of pipe which I slipped over
the levery bit of the stand for your foot, to increase the leverage.

Worked for a few years before it ripped the lever off.

Yeah, mate of mine (who was generously built) had the lever snap off
without benefit of pipe. During a trip across the nullabor.

I found the GT550 centrestand painful to use, but it was usable.

  16. Concur... the only bike I ever used the centrestand on was the GPz500
courier hack, and even after a couple of months of hoicking it up some
60-70 times a day, it never became effortless, even with my
    (considerable) weight and (expansive) reach...

....something about the shape of the pads, as far as I could figure it.
They just wouldn't let the bike roll up onto the stand.

saw some time ago the blokes at a bike shop where the guys pulled the rear
of the bike up by tipping the bike further over with the side stand - maybe
this is the go but would need two to do it.

    Ps dont knock old technology!

  18. The grease sealed in by the O-rings only lubricates the interfaces
between the pins and the roller bushings on one side, and the roller
bushings and the rollers on the other. That leaves the interface
between the rollers and the sprocket teeth as metal-on-metal.
The original chain on the ZX6 lasted to ~55,000km. I ran a rag over it
and lubed it every 400km or after every ride in the wet, whichever
came first, without fail. When its replacement went on, circumstance
in the shape of much wet touring and extended periods away from home
rather than outright slackarseism led to it being much more neglected.
It was ready for the bin well before I finally got around to replacing
it a couple of weeks ago, at 77,000km.
