I've been told that you can no longer get a free restest 'cause of the
new computer systems.. has anyone else had problems with this ? My
Bike's been off the road since October now since I have not got around
to getting the stupid MOT ! ( and the weather hasn't been too great ...
    ) It's in on Monday..

Welcome to the free world, where technology is there to make life *easier*,
    for all of us!

Yes, it's true - try to take it somewhere where they're not so anal as to
fail it on something as minor as a blown bulb, rather than just fit one and
bill you for it when you return.

My garage has got so anal, my car has sat on the drive for 7 weeks
    after failing its MOT. :-(

There's places round here offering 'no pass, no fee' which sounds well dodgy
    to me.

Retests have never been officially free. What a test station charges for
an MOT is entirely up to themselves.

VOSA state that an MOT charge is 'up to' the amount advised each year,
certain items are retested free if the vehicle is taken from the
premises and returned by the end of the next working day. In all other
cases (where a vehicle is taken away for repair) a FULL test must be
carried out. There is no retest.

Whether they charge for the second test is entirely at their discretion.

Now that bit is out of the way, the computerised MOT has now made it
impossible for a tester to merely bung a vehicle back on the ramp, have
a look at the bits that failed and issue a pass. They have to clock onto
the vehicle for a normal test duration. While they are doing this, they
    cannot carry out another test.

It's also not worthwhile cheating the system either, as the VOSA
inpsectors can check what vehicle is being tested at any time, and call
in to see it being tested. So when you clock onto a test, you have to
physically have that vehicle in the test bay.

    Eh.
    Make your mind up.

You are correct that "certain items are retested free" so surley retests can
    be free.

Yes they can but the tester has used up a "test allocation" for the
day. VOSA now know how many certified testers a station has and
therefore how many tests they can do in a day based on the average
test duration. Exceed this and they *will* look into it.

The new system therefore prevents the quick check of the bits that
failed meaning most places charge the full test fee again. Given that
all stations are now limited in how many tests they can do in a day,
they're not exactly short of work so why bother offering free retests?

    How so?

Is it that fecked in their (not so) honest opinion, or are you just not able
to get a retest time suitable to you both?

<ding> spot on. We now have to pay in advance for test slots every day,
and wheile we're using one for a 'free' retest, we're not doing a full
    paying test.
They actually monitor each test live as it's being done, so any 'quick'
retests will be caught out straight away.

We actually got a written caution for starting a test two minutes before
our official start time for the day.
Indeed, with the old system we could get away with up to 15 in a day,
providing it wasn't too often, but now we can only manage a certain 8,
or 10 if they are good tests.

Of course there is no fixed time for a test, but with all the crap that
goes with it now, they are expected to take a minimum amount of time.
Most test centres will allow 50 minutes to an hour.

Manpower!. Why would you think they'd made us all install a live

Yes, I did actually see the notice that arrived at our terminal.

Indeed. She was involved in designing and testing it. I know far
more about the crap than I want to as she never shut up about it for
    12 months.
