    <bites and spells it out>
His son might believe he has misplaced his car keys when in fact Rope
has deliberatly placed them somewhere in order to prevent his son from
    driving.

    A flashing one's no good.

You want a full-on directional jobbie that scans oncoming traffic like a
    satellite tracker.

  4. Do you actually think he is anyway? All the BHALC members are just
    authoritarian politicos in disguise.
Well he'll be OK in a few years time when his sex life improves.

I wasn't fishing. I'd put that as "He might misplace his son's keys."
    I'll try to keep up.

I knew you'd bring that up - I still feel guilty about it you know :(

Though in my defence I'd like to think even had I realised and not said
anything, that Nidge would have noticed by now - especially as he has a
    different bike.

But I guess we'll never know.

There aren't really two sides here Nidge.

There's just you, and everybody else.

    <thinks>

In 5 years of riding, I can recall that I've had two vehicles pull out
on me - one when I had my scooter and one when I had the GSX-R. The
GSX-R one was a doddery old cnut who pulled out in front of me and a
car coming the other way - I think being a small version of the sun
    wouldn't have changed that incident.
But your ride imposes on others. That is a difference.
    Because we don't agree?
Yes well. As you said, no point really eh?
But why? Surely, by the logic you're using, Vision Plus main beams
(which I can assure you are astounding in their brightness) would be
    even better?

Here are four tangible facts for you:-

    1) If you shine a bright light into someone's face from a distance,
they'll just see a bright light. It's not possible to accurately judge
the speed at which the light is moving away from you, towards you, or
whether it's stationary because the light obscures the area around its
source and prevents you from being able to see if the light source is
getting larger or smaller in your field of vision.

    2) If you shine a bright light into someone's face, the instinctive
human reaction is to look away from it.

    3) If you shine a bright light into someone's face, it takes around
10-12 seconds after the light source has gone for the pigment
regeneration to complete, and therefore for the bleached green "blobs"
that you will see to clear.

    4) It takes much longer for eyes to adjust from bright conditions to
darker conditions than it does the other way around. The vision of
whoever you point your main beam at may be affected for several minutes
    after you've passed them.

These four points are all tangible facts that you can observe in your
own home by simple experimentation using a bright light and a stopwatch.

If there was any credence at all to your claims, then all vehicles would
be advised by the DSA to use main beam at all times and the roads would
be a much safer place because of it. Fortunately, most people have the
good sense to realise that pointing bright lights at people when they're
trying to drive or ride is quite a bad idea.
Why is it not OK to ride behind other bikes on main beam, but it is OK
to ride behind or towards cars and lorries?

I don't know you from Adam or know how many times this has been gone
over in the past, but I have to say it does sound like you're being more
than a little bit dense as well as very selfish.

As I've passed in front of a driver waiting to pull out of a side
turning on my right, I've seen them go from looking up the road to
their right to down on their left as I passed in front of them and it's
obvious they didn't see me at all. As I was making a right turn into
the the side road they've pulled out nearly clipping the back of the
    bike.

  15. Well I detect a very strong thread of intolerance in many of the BHALC
posts. There is rarely a willingness to consider other opinions and
there is a presumption that their view is the only one that has any
validity. And isn't it so bloody obvious that they are right that anyone
who does not agree is as thick as two short planks. The attitude goes
well beyond the extent to which any of us may hold our own opinion on
    something.

It's an intolerant and arrogant approach and it sets my teeth on edge.
Doubly so when I know (up to a point) the people in real life and don't
usually find them displaying such intolerance and arrogance.
Sorry I'll get any future references correct.

Don't let it worry you, as soon as you see the main beam just up the
pace a bit and the problem vanishes.
