To the best of my knowledge it was generally considered too soft to be
taken seriously as a sports bike, although Kawasaki certainly intended
it to be one, they missed the bar they were shooting at.

Not really, track/race bikes are generally modified sports bikes, but
they can be modified anythings (consider the Harley Sportster racing and
CB125's racing in bucket racing)
