MotoGp V4...

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Larry xlax Lovisone, May 10, 2005.

  1. MotoGp is the battle of engine architects I tell you... the V4 advantage will
prevail... nothing for you to cry about because there's a V4 in your future...

    The engine architect score...

    Yamaha I4... (1939)
    Kawasaki I4... (1939)
    Honda V5... (2000)
    Suzuki V4... (1989)
    Ducati V4... (1989)
    Roberts V4... (1989)

Team Roberts races a V4 at Lemans... is Yamaha next???

  2. Thanks... the great V4 needs a voice in a sea of stinky inlines... I hope a V4
gets a chance to entertain the seat of your pants someday soon... well soon as
Rossi retires from Yamaha ha ha that is...

But Larry a better motor is out there! The
earliest version was raced briefly in the late
50's but was sidelined due to waterpump and fuel
    issues. It's a V8! Interesting that in the 50's
that an Italian makers could produce(in limited
    quantity I admit) a 500cc V8 that was almost 2.5cm
NARROWER than the competitions motors with fewer
    cylinders.

  5. Don't hold yer breath: The Yamaha Growler has all the V4 advantages
without the long length. And who dares mess with the Ride of Rossi
    when Rossi is winning?

The next V4 will probably be 2007 Honda, as the weight advantage for a
V5 goes away under the 2007 rules. Yamaha is probably going to stick
with Grower I4s, they have a lot of experience AND it helps sell R1s

  6. The I4 may be shorter but it's to wide for MotoGp... extra width is the
penalty... not to mention extra bearing drag and peaky power delievery...
Rossi's chief wrench... Jeremy Burgess... is on record stating that the "V4 is
the best engine for MotoGp"... so if Jeremy calls for a V4... Yamaha better
build it... because Rossi trust Jeremy's win strategy...

  7. MotoGuzzi V8 is a technology master piece and one of my favorite engines to
study... but I'd hardy proclaim the excess of a V8 a better than a minimal V4
for motorcycling... even Honda's NR750 (virtual V8) failed to find favor...
So here you go Keith... behold the MotoGuzzi V8... see it and hear it... too bad
we can't smell it and touch it eh???

I've got that page in favorites already thank you.
8^) I also have the .wav file as my start up sound
for several programs. I have a Wright R3450 as the
system start up sound(system shut down when
    thunderstorms).
    The NR750 doesn't count...bad design good idea.
Especially when compared to the 'Guzzi motor.
Anyway it isn't "Excess" it's "Just Right"
especially if modern materials are used. I'd bet a
nickel it could be designed narrower than a I4 and
with more cylinder produce more power with less
    stress.

    MY BAD! I meant a R4360 starting up...NOW THAT'S A
MOTOR. Loud also...somewhere I've got a sound file
of a B36 doing a flyover, first time I played that
with the volume turned all the way up the speakers
shook off the table. 8^) Nothing sounds quite like
a radial motor, nor does anything stir the blood
of a gearhead as much. I can't find a file of the
Fiat X24 motor it was a 24cyl with an X
    layout...had to sound sweet.

Ah the 4360... the corn comb... I know what you mean about the deafening drone
of a B36... one flew over Oakland in 1955 and rattled every window on the
block... from my 8 year perspective it looked as if the whole mess was winging

No such engine! What you may have meant is the Wright "Cyclone" 3350 as in
the KB50,KC97, DC7C and so on. The 3350 was the only Turbo compound engine
from Wright and the only larger engine was the PW 4360 "Wasp Major" (4
banks of 7 cylinders) as apposed to two banks of 9 in the Wright 3350. The
4360 Cubic inces BTW, was flown in the likes of the B-36 10 engine bomber,
with 4 J47 jets in later models, C-119 "Flying box car" and C124 "Old
Shakey". Both engine had about the same HP or ~3500-3600 max in stock
form. That said, I believe Rare Bear is pushing over 4000HP with the 3350
as is "Dreadnought with it's 4360. See links below:

8 valve Oval piston V4 and it was an NR500 not 750.
The best ( most pragmatic and smoothest) Motorcycle engine layout is a
20,000RPM inline triple if anyone has the inclination of doing it up right;)

  15. Because Yamaha spent the off season designing a new M1 with even more compact
engine design to further concentrate the weight around the centre of gravity...
but you are still limited when you line up all the cylinders in a row... Yamaha
will drop the I4 sooner or later... just like they did with the TZ back in 84...
and you'll like the choice of a Yamaha 999cc V4 MotoGp based road bike because
you already know how disappointing a 999cc I4 feels like...

  16. A: The M1 is designed to FEEL like a V4 without needing to be a V4,
due to the firing order. Yeah, the growler config doesn't have the
primary balance, but you can't shorten a V4 (a big problem with the
V4: its LONG) without going narrow angle, and then you lose the primary
    balance advantage.

B: Nobody is going to do a new engine architecture for 06, it will
wait for 07 when the displacement rules change (900cc instead of
    999cc).

c: If you really care about narrowness, you could also do an oval
piston I4, and/or frame over engine architecture. Between the two, if
you needed to be much narrower than the current M1, it's not a
problem, especially since you need to redo the engine for 07 anyway.

d: Rossi could be riding a hamster powered unicycle and he'd still
win. so who cares about the engine config? :)

  17. The current rules allow 990cc. Proposed rule changes aren't set in stone,
the displacement limit may be set considerably lower than 900cc.
    A W4 would be even narrower than a V4....

  18. Pard the NR500 was Honda's first V4 and the NR750 was a 1992 V4 oval piston 32
valve 8 con rod production version... it inspired Duacti's under seat exhaust
    system you know...

Larry, check your facts before typing. That was 8/valves per cylinder and
the NR500 was built to run against the 2 stroke 500's of that era.
