    Because helmets aren't magical.

I got a head injury that kept me in hospital a week, and I was wearing a
    helmet.

A helmet will prevent some head injuries, and lessen some others. Hit
your head hard enough and that's that, lid or no lid.

Just because your not bound by law, doesn't mean you shouldn't wear one.

Hind sight is always 20/20. Very tragic and sad.

Bali has a helmet law. Has had for over 10 years.

There's no law says you have to ride a motorcycle either...

The article says that she was in Paddys Bar the night before the bombing
then straight away says how she was 16 at the time of the bombing where
    she helped morgue workers.

Does Bali have an 18+ law for pubs/clubs?

    noangel.

The do have helmet laws, but the locals are pretty slack about it.
Have also heard stories about "visitors" being hassled by the cops
though to grease their palm, even if you haven't got the strap being
    done up.

That being said, when I rented a bike over there the helmet that came
with the bike was basically one of those soft plastic baseball helmet
type contraptions. Might as well been wearing an ice cream container.
I asked the guy if he had a better helmet and just got basically a
    blank look .

Given the above I wore the thing , but didn't really feel all that
protected, though I must admit that I felt safer in the traffic there
    than I do back home.

While riding around I noticed that "AGV" motocross helmets where about
$ 40 Australian. Was going to buy one but basically was on my way
back to the hotel when I came across them and wasn't going to ride
    again.

Which is true even in a car. Why don't you wear one in a car?...

Actually, your skull does a pretty good job.
I certainly prefer to use my skull instead of just a helmet.

Not to anywhere near the same extent. I've crashed a car at 150km/h and
walked off without a scratch. I'd have no such chance on a bike.

Racers do that and survive all the time.

Besides, what makes you think death in that case would be due to head
injury always, and not spinal or internals?

The majority of crash cases in head injury wards are from car crashes.

So *you* have an indestructible head when you drive (or crash) a cage?

Depends what you aim for. If your car had ploughed into a parked tractor
you'd probably not have walked away. I've been over the handlebars on my bike
at 130kph removing the aftermarket screen with my knee on the way past.
Chances are, if I'd had leather pants on that day, rather than jeans, the edge
on the screen wouldn't have cut through my pants and my leg. The only other
injuries I suffered were a small graze on one wrist.

And given that the large majority of carpassenger deaths are head
Well it's about risk management. You can't tell me that a motorcycle is
safer than a car, not on public streets under normal conditions. Sure people
in cars get maimed and killed, but they do so at a far less rate and survive
far more accidents than people on bikes. I'm prepared to live with the risk
of not wearing a helmet in a car, I'm not willing to do the same on a bike.
