It's a strange game, the only way to win is not to play.

My F800GS averages around 4.7 l/100km. That's everything including long
runs at 130+ km/h on Conti TKCs, and single-track at lower speeds. If I
baby it, I can do a lot better. I don't baby it much; where would be the
fun in that? It's set up for high-octane gas; if I'm forced by
circumstance to use lower-octane, the consumption suffers by about 15%
(although it otherwise runs just fine).

    My R1150RT is a pretty consistent 5.0 l/100km. That's almost all
high-speed touring, one-up, 3 hard cases with not a ton of stuff in 'em.
At 180 lbs, I'm not terribly large either.

I have no idea if that's good or bad, since I've never really cared
about mileage per se, at least in terms of $$ consumed. The GS has the
computer and display built-in, so it's easy to keep track of. I'll keep
track of the RT on maybe one run per year. I use the numbers as an
indicator that all is well with the bikes. Or not, as the case may be. I
just like 'em to be consistent.

Ha. I knew exactly what Andy's post would be before I read it, and I
knew exactly what your reply to his post would be before I read that.

    Go me.

The tyres will still have more trade in value than a 20K mile
    motorbike

  13. Yes. That's the clever bit.

ISTR that the Ford Orbital two-stroke car engine, that never made
production, was an SC engine as well.

    I could be wrong. Anyone?

You're just jealous I buy tires at cost instead of list+35% you get
    raped for.

idiots, this is why I replied...

So you can only afford tyres when you buy the cheapest ones around and
get them at cost? I'm glad that the recession has hit you cunts good
and hard. That'll teach US banks not to lend rednecks money to buy new
    trailers.

And who rides it like a nun on a moped, if he gets 20,000 miles out of
    the tyres.

    Neil,

There have been motorcyclists on your side of the pond in this very
thread who've reported that they get anywhere from as few as 10,000
kilometers to over 50,000 kilometers from their automobile tires.

I get more miles out of my Chevy truck's tires than I do out of the
sporting tires on my Mazda MX-5 Miata, despite the Miata being much
    lighter.

I also get 10,000 miles out of a front tire and 20,000 miles out of
the rear tire on my Harley bagger, while only getting about 2,500
miles out of a front tire and 3,500 miles out of a rear tire on my
Ducati S4rs, and the latter is the "weekend plaything."

I assure you that none of the vehicles are ridden "like a nun on a
moped"; but I admit that that does sound much more colorful than
saying "some tires - whether for cars or motorcycles - are designed
for long tread life and others are designed for maximum sporting
traction, thus they wear at different rates."

Well, yeah. And I've ridden on hard tyres too. They're never been that
confidence-inspiring in the wet. I've never got 20k miles out of any
rear tyre on any motorcycle I've ever owned, so I really do shudder at
the what something that hard perfroms like.

I haven't come across many tyres that wear faster on the front than
    the back, either.

OK, then: "He must ride a very low-powered bike and in the wet, rides
    like a nun on a moped." :)

I once ordered by mistake a set ob BT001 instead of a set of BT010.
Softer they were and lasted less than 2,000Km, but praise the Lord how
much I fucking enjoyed myself trying to push the limits and finding
them further away! (and it was my era of chewing Supercorsae on a
    regular basis)
