Futurama! (although googling for 'Zoidberg' will give you some idea
of who I'm comparing Nurse Hammo to ...)

Well, for one thing, it still runs carbs.
For another, the frame of the 1200 is_very_similar to that of the 1100.
That would likely not be the case if the engine the frame had to wrap
around was significantly more compact or differently shaped... relative
to the ZZ-R1100 unit, the ZX12 engine is both. It's short with a very
tall head, while the ZZ-R1100 is just_big_.
You know what they say about the relationship between things that aren't
broken and the act of fixing...

Suzuki still do brisk trade in Bandits. As a whole, that engine dates
back to the first GSX-R's, of 1985, and the only real difference between
it and the Katana, from 1980, is the cylinder head (have a closer look
    next time you're at a wrecker's).

To be fair, though, the ZZ-R1200 engine is supposedly a development of
the ZRX1200 unit, which is, in turn, descended from the ZRX1100 motor,
which was developed not from the ZZ-R1100, but the GPz1100 (though I am
a bit fuzzy on the exact differences between the two), and the changes
between the two are supposed to be significant; changes to cylinder head
stud pattern etc. Basic architecture unaffected, but no backwards
    compatibility.

...and the ZZR1100 would have evolved from the ZX10 engine presumably.

Yes I do, but it's a maxim most motor vehicle manufacturers ignore. I
will have to grant however that given the long product life of the
Kawasaki Concours (that's a GPZ engine from the early 80's and the
brakes to match, no ?) that assuming that Kwaka updated ANYTHING is a
    seriously dangerous assumption :)
Well, actually they're not selling real well anymore, but hey, they've
well and truly paid off the tooling !
Yeah,I know that one (being a bandit owner and all) but the 2nd gen
bandit (umm '99 ?) has a different power plant, for the life of me I
can't tell you how different (it's about 2 years since I've been on the
bandit list) but they extracted an extra 25Hp out of it...
now THAT sounds more like what i recall reading.

The mid nineties GPZ1100 was a detuned version of the Minja. 36mm
side draft carbs instead of 40mm downdraft, flatter cam lift etc.
Basically a 20-25 hp drop in exchange for two grand left in your
pocket. Still had 129hp at the crank and around 110 on the ground.
