I knew we have a mouse or meeses in the garage, one of those open weave
decorators throws has made a lovely nest for them, of course as with all
rodents they cant just curl up in it, they have to chew it to bits to get it
    just right for them.

The throw was ontop of my welder, which is in the corner of the little
'room' at the end of the garage, one used to be the bog the other the coal
    hole i think,
i wasnt fussed, we live right on the edge of town so more in the country so
we're used to seeing wildlife about, and the mouse haddnt chewed any wires
or owt, so i was happy to let him live there.

That was untill i needed to do a quick bit of welding today, i made a lot of
noise so he'd **** off before i removed his nest from the top of the welder,
wheeled it out, set it up, put me welding helmet on and started welding, but
my eyes were watering, and when i took a deep breath i almost passed out,

The little bastard has been using my welding helmet as his toilet.

The dog went mental when she sniffed it after i had thrown it on the floor
to get some fresh air, and proceded to lick all the mouse crap and piss
    stains up,
then i had to take all the electronics out (one of those autodarkening
jobbies) so i could pressure wash the helmet, then give it a good spray with
    fabreeze,
i now have a nail in the wall to hang the helmet up when i'm done welding,

  3. Often thought of getting one of those autodarkening jobbies.

Any pointers as to where a good place to get one is?

Cheap so I can justify getting it.

i paid about 30 quid for mine from the newark autojumble,

they seem to go for similar ammounts on fleabay, and of course there are
models that go upto three figures, but for the occasional welding i do, i
couldent justify more than what i paid.

but bod it makes your life so much easier, once you get one you'll wonder
how you managed with the 'flip up, position the torch where you want it,
flip down, strike the arc, notice you've moved the torch before striking, go
    to 1' :)

Personally, I don't think I'd bother licking the crap and piss stains up at
    all.

I got a couple of fleabay. About 20 quid a pop IIRC. Both are still in
regular use and I've never had a welding flash using either of 'em.
