Moving to UK

    Hi All

I'm a regular member of aus.motorcycles, and it looks like my wife and I
will be moving from Sydney to the UK in March, so I thought I'd swing on in
here and say 'G'day' to everyone. I've also got a few questions in case
    anyone can help me out.

Through my research so far I've discovered that new bike prices are
substantially higher (10-20%) in the UK than in Australia, but used bike
prices are less (...?) So I guess I'll be looking around for a couple of
used bikes. My wife rides an SV650S currently, and I'm rather partial to the
Yam FZ1, and I would expect that those models would be easy enough to find.
If anyone can direct me to a good online resource for bikes in the UK I'd be
most grateful. I'm also accustomed to riding 12 months of the year, and so I
suspect I'm in for a nasty shock come next winter.

As far as location, my wife will be working in Ipswich and I will be working
throughout the greater London area (I'm an IT consultant). We've been trying
to find somewhere sensible to live (looking via the web). Is Chelmsford a
decent place? Is the A12 a decent road for commuting on a bike (both to
Ipswich and London)? Does anyone have any other recommendations for living
location for this Ipswich/London working combination?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know the folks at
    uk.rec.motorcycles.

    Cheers,
    Manning

PS - Yes, congrats on the rugby. We've all taken the loss rather well,
mainly because we are of the opinion that our lads did a fine job just to
keep the score so close when England were so obviously the superior team.
(There, I said it - England *were* superior). Still, cricket season is only
    a few months away... :)

    Hi and welcome.

Heh. It was about 2 degrees C here this morning. I suspect
even darsy might be thinking of using his winter gloves soon.
I'm sure someone from that area will be along soon to help you with
    that.
You might want to check out the FAQ otherwise you might be in for
a bit of an eye-opener - there are some real rufty tufty bikers
    here )

    Hi Manning,

As I work around Ipswich I suppose I should respond to at lest one of your
questions and that would be the A12 one. The A12 is pretty good in general for
commuting between Ipswich and London, if you are on two wheels, but can be a
pain if you are in a cage, what with all the roadwork's there usually are.
Can't tell you if Chelmsford's an o.k. place to live as I reside just outside of
Ipswich, but I'm sure it can't be all bad.
Wouldn't you consider buying second hand bikes locally, after you have found
somewhere to live? If you haven't driven over here before on two wheels in
winter, then don't even think about it until you have had advise from some more
knowledgeable than me. My Pan doesn't come out when it's frosty for anyone. I
don't mind dropping it so much, but picking it up on a slippy surface is nigh on
    impossible :)
Why on earth you would want to come here I don't know (I have friends in Manly)
    but you'll be welcome anyway.
Thanks for the comments on the Rugby as well. I knew Aussies were magnanimous
    :)

    Appreciated :)
My Scottish wife has been offered a great position in her field
(Environmental Science) and as she has limited experience thus far she has
had enormous trouble finding relevant work here. So we're moving over there.
Urggh. Oh, well, at least I'll be within reasonable distance of more than
    one MotoGP event a year.
FAQ read. Very well done and congrats to the parties responsible.

I've read through the last few weeks of postings and the culture here isn't
too different to aus.motorcycles. (aus.motorcycles is currently into the
468th day of Harsh Week). There are also more than a few familiar names here
from people who frequent both groups.

Looking forward to getting my own BOTAFOT number, though hopefully not 13
(and sadly no chance of 69 due to marital obligations).

For whomever it may concern: The link to
http://www.sharkey.demon.co.uk/blood/ is dead for some reason (found at
    http://www.ukrm.net/faq/ukrmfaq1a.html).

Did a Google search on Usenet Rule 306 a/b but came up empty...

    Cheers Chris (and all others)

Ah. Yes. Now. There's a thing. Fancy volunteering? You'd get a number
    and everything.
Don't worry, Bruce, you don't need to be concerned about either.

That's all well and good. What about your wife? Would she have any
interest in gaining that number? You do know it's traditional don't you?

Just up the road from me.

Currently a bit overpriced for what it is but a reasonable place to live
as county towns go. North and North West are the posh bits. To the
South and East the River Chelmer flood plain does exactly what it says
    on the packet.

No road /into/ London is good for commuting.

England still is fucking superior and don't you fucking forget it if you
want to live here in peace and harmony with the indigenous population.

Manning? Prevailing winds are westerly here. You'll want to be west of
