What the f*ck has that got to do with it? Or were you hoping I'd infer
    that meant you couldn't post?

I checked before posting just to make sure you had had the chance to
reply. My post appeared on my newsreader at 00.36. In just this thread
you replied to a post of Platy's at 06.36, one of Will Grainger's at
12.41 and one of ogden's at 16.48. You may well have been posting from
work, but that's not the point is it?

Perhaps it's the fault of your news server - why not try that one?

  2. Nice, and nice to be corrected (I assume you know more than I do, which
is why I added the caveat). Thanks for the info.

Two members of my team were talking about some bint of their acquaintance
this afternoon, and one of them came out with a terrific turn of phrase:

"She's seen more shags than a copper's torch."

Bloody odd that, I've not heard of it before.

Most of my (non-mathematical) course papers were submitted printed using
a DEC PDP8 system or a Beeb IIRC. This was before the PC was in
circulation FWIW. Maybe you were an arts student or similar...

You appear to have missed something. IIRC, Word isn't a newsreader, and
it's certainly not a classy one. And as for Microsoft's record for
    following established standards, well...

The problem is, one tends to wander about looking for opportunities to use
    it.

This is true. For news, proper, you need electronic media. What you
seldom get with these, in the age of the 10-second soundbite, is the
informed opinion and comment you find in print.

And you very rarely get the beautiful use of language that you
    encounter in print.

I *think* (without googling) that the UK has the highest newspaper
readership in the EU. I dunno if any Continental newspaper can rival
    The Sun's 4 million-odd daily sales.

Like the Sun or loathe it, it is a very, very good indicator and/or
mirror of the feelings of the British working class. And its
    sub-editors are extraordinarily good.

Returning to European newspapers as a whole, I really, really doubt if
there's anyone who can give a dispassionate opinion on the European
press as a whole. I can't imagine anyone being that polyglot, and with
the time on his/her hands to digest the national press output of an
    entire continent.

I'd take issue with 90% of people who pronounce on the entire UK, or
French, press because I'll wager that damn few of them read and
analyse enough to be able to voice a worthwhile opinion.

Raises a point, though. What newspapers do people here regularly (ie:
more than three times a week) read?

    Me:

Dailies: Mail, Times, Telegraph, Guardian. (FT occasionally, maybe
    once a week)
    Sundays: MoS, Sunday Times.
