  1. I hate to say it but none. What news I do glean I get via the web.

I don't hate to admit I do the same.

I also listen to a fair amount of UK, US & Australian radio via the
Internet, so get a fair picture of world events from different angles.

  4. It just seems strange to use the American spelling, when all other
elements with that ending are spelled "-ium" (IYKWIM). Or does anyone
actually use such terms as "Uranum", "Sodum", "Barum" etc? Oh, and
lead is lead, so archaic names don't count.

    Platinum and Lanthanum, too.

  6. Oops. I sit corrected. "-ium" elements are still in the majority,
though. I give you Dubnium, Seaborgium, Bohrium, Hassium,
Darmstadtium (aka Ununnilium) and Unununium, Ununbium, Ununquadium and
Ununhexium as further examples. When I was at school, about to drop
out of A-level chemistry, the Periodic Table stopped at
    Rutherfordium...

  7. You forgot Unobtanium.

TOG's (IIRC) definition of reading a paper regularly was "more than
    three times a week".

He then went on to list the "Sunday" papers he read; but how could they
be read regularly if he read them less than three times a week...

UK tax take is one of the lowest in Europe, isn't it?

*waves* from Switzerland, where they're even lower. But yes, France
has _much_ higher taxation, both as income tax and overall (VAT is
17.5% on most things now), than the UK. Not as bad as Germany though,
    I'm told.

    No, I said "tax take"

  19. Now whether it's down to open or hidden taxes I've found from living in
several countries in Europe; Spain cheapest (not living on the coast)
followed by France and then pre-unification Germany. I understand that
for Germany it all went tits-up with reunification and haven't had a
home and lived there since 1983. But as places to have a home, live,
eat, drink and buy things Spain and France are a lot cheaper to live in
    than the UK.

I agree, but I'm pretty sure it's _not_ down to lower taxation. One of
the main factors, IMO, is that house proces are so much lower, leaving
much more 'disposable' income. Sure, many things, esp. alcohol and
tobacco (although that's changing) are cheaper to buy as well, but I
don't think our monthly shopping expediture has changed by very much
at all since we've been over here.
