And people forget these days just how hugely popular "Bat Max" was
before Rossi came along. (And this is mostly why Rossi initially
targeted him so much!)
In the mid 90s it was Max stopping on the cool-down lap and climbing the
fences to the adoration of the screaming hordes.

 

He brought a massive amount of sponsorship $$$$$ to the team.

It's a bit sad really, isn't it? It's not enough that you take an often
marginal product and score podium finishes with it, you've then got to do
half the work that the publicity and marketing divisions should be doing
('cos they already get paid heaps of money for it) as well!
