I dont see that the product or the manafacturer store any information
about a users movement at all.

It merely compares its position with known 'black spots'.

I used to live in Clifton Hill, where one of those cameras is, and even
before Christmas last year they had switched on the dual thing. It the
Smith St/Alexandria Parade intersection and had watched on many, many
occasions that camera getting both speeders and red light runners. So this
crap about them just switching across to dual is a crock! And you only have
to be going 5kmh over to get pinged which leaves very little room for error.

    Cheers

Can you please translate what you wrote there
Do they operate as a speed camera separately from the red light camera
or do they operate in synch?

Cool. I wonder how many drivers, upon approaching the intersection look down
at their speedo and crash into the guy in front who has jammed on the brakes
    on the amber?

Your road safety dollars working for you.

I'm familiar with the intersection you're talking about - what's
interesting about this site is that there are 2 cameras on that
corner - one on the left and another on the right kerbs and both
pointing in the same direction for just 3 lanes of traffic - does
    anyone know why ?

Also, just west of that intersection (Queens Pde) another camera has
recently been installed. There is however a warning sign alerting you
to the fact that cameras operate in the area - BUT the sign is placed
between the two intersecitons, the authorites were not nice enough to
let you know before both !

They have the same camera setup on Dandenong Rd at Orrong Rd intersection.
Both these intersections have left turn lane, right turn lane and 3 lanes of
traffic going straight through. I guess one camera does 3 lanes and the other
    does 2 lanes.

rear enders are the lesser of 2 evils

tbone accidents would cause more deaths than a fender bending nose to
    tail

I have no problem with red light cameras, low tolerance speed
    cameras...different story

That's exactly my thinking. Whilst I'm actually using it in the car only for
now [need to add a cig power outlet to my bike...], knowing there's a
red/speed cam ahead gives me time to maybe add another half a second
[2/2.5 -> 2.5/3] and prepare for any stupidity that might arise out of the
    cam's mere presence.

Worries me that so many people have trouble with this "scan the speedo"
thing. If they can't check the speed quickly, and they can't pay enough
attention to what's in front of them, it's a wonder we don't have more
    crashes than we do.

I duno that "drivers are braindead and utterly unskilled" is a *good*
    argument against cameras.

Even going through such intersections AT the speed limit has its risks.
Me, I usually take 20 km/h off when I go through them. One that I go
through each day is in an 80 km/h zone. It's more than my nerves can
bear to whistle through there at 80 km/h when there are dickheads
inching their way into the intersection to cross my path.

Already there's been a number of crashes where bikes have been taken out
by cars. Most recently, some dickhead in a Statesman, played chicken
    with a truck and lost.

I'm all for these new red light/speed cameras.

All we need now is for them to be fitted with a receiver to pick up
mobile phone transmissions, take a shot of the driver and number plate
and send him/her the appropriate fine.

As intersections can be the most dangerous places, the last thing you
need is some stupid prick who's distracted by what's happening around
    him when going through one.

And while I'm at it, a luminance detector that goes off when it detects
wankers running with their "fog" lights on during the day.

Imagine it. In one fell swoop, we can put a dickhead off the road for 6
months and slug him $1,000. One for running a red light. One for
speeding. One for using a mobile phone and one for having his wanker
    lights on...

Shit, we could come up with all sorts of ideas to catch out the
    miscreants on the roads...
