I've got two multimeters, a mega expensive Fluke & a cheapo Gunson,
both of which used to work fine. However when checking a battery at the
weekend, the Fluke read 18v & the Gunson 8v. So I tried two other
batteries, with the same results. All the batteries are fine - start
their respective vehicles no problem. WTF?

Something to do with them being set to AC rather than DC?

Did you leave them out in the shed to get damp?

Ah, ok, worth a check then. Bit weird if they've both died at the same
    time.

I'm not suggesting that you are, and it would seem unlikely that you'd
manage to set them both incorrectly *and* that one would under-read by a
factor of ~2^½ while the other would over-read by a factor of ~2^½, but
I thought it was worth mentioning because the numbers were roughly right
and there are *some* complete mongs on here, even if you're not one of
    them. Allegedly.

That's 2 votes for batteries then. Weirdly the Fluke's still on the
same battery it had when I 'acquired' it[1] about 22 years ago. The
Gunson is too, but I only that a couple of years ago.
    Ta, handy to know.

[1] It may be BT branded. Possibly.

Mine is. It says 'Fluke 77/BT' at the top of the display, has 'British
Telecom' printed on the front, & is in a lovely shade of BT yellow with
    a grey rubber case.

Flukes are yellow anyway, but I'm sure mine doesn't have BT on it...
    <checks>

    with a yellow rubber surround.

Mine's a dark gray 77 with a mid gray rubber surround.
It also has the RS label and part number, 612-142, printed by the factory.

Depends on the model and suchlike. We've got one at work (can't remember the
model) which is light grey. My model 70 is a dark greeny grey as are the 77s
we've got with grey rubber surrounds.
