Multitools, which one?

In the corner of my bedroom is an old huge whisky bottle I throw my
coppers and 5ps into when I can be arsed. Over the years it's got to a
point where it's becoming a PITA to move as it's so heavy. As it's
nearing full I want to empty it and buy something to keep, and a
multitool came to mind this morning.

I've looked at Leathermans, Gerbers and Schrades on the net this
morning, but can't see that any one has any better features over the
    others.

What make is the best, and why.

I've got a Leatherman, it just works and I haven't managed to break it
    yet.

I have a Leatherman Wave which I like very much. I also have two Micras,
    which I like too.

Leatherman's after-sales service is *stunning*. I fucked one of the
Micras by being stupid, fessed up, sent it back for repair and they
replaced it FOC in a couple of days.

    Leatherman.

I have two Victorinox knives and two Leathermans.

The tool that gets used most often is the Next multitoolalike that I was
given for Christmas a few years ago and cost about a tenner

Oh good, another opportunity to mention my Williams F1 multitool.

    Err, that's all.

Best? I dunno, but this one has worked well for me for
    years: http://sogknives.com/store/S60.html

The extra leverage from the gears is possibly a gimmick,
but it feels like it can fairly clamp or cut a little bit
    more.

Support from them is top notch too - I snapped a blade as a
result of my own stupidity, and explained this to them. Without
any fuss they posted out a replacement blade, which is easy
    to put in.

  10. The main difference I could see when I bought my Gerber was how the
handles were when opened out - the Leatherman handles opened out so
that the edges of the handles were outmost whereas the Gerber had the
smooth, rounded side outmost. Which meant that squeezing the handles
    didn't hurt my hands..
Other than the above there is very little difference as far as I could
    see.

I'll watch this one with interest, Loz, as I've been umming over
multitools for *years* and still haven't got a proper one. There's a
couple of cheapies knocking about, which come in handy every now and
again(1), and a Screwfix Swiss Army Knife that comes out with me in
company with a pair of pliers(2,3), but I'd like a decent combo tool.

Oddly, I have <looks over at shelf> the product of my coppers pot
sitting in cash bags atm, looking for a wordy cows. A year of collecting
the little fuckers, a cubic foot of copper and 5p coins - total, 20
quid. A drop in the ocean of 100 quid for a TOTR Leatherber tool: I'd
be better off using them as washers again.

OTOH, I cashed in my other coin pot before hols and that yielded
sufficent for ice creams all round every day, with some left over so
that can go in the fund too.

    1. And are painful to use as pliers, and nip the web between index
finger and thumb, and the screwdrivers are next to fucking useless ...

    2. Snap-On slip-joint, natch.

    3. Accompanied, in their turn, by a 1/4 drive socket set including hex
    drivers, screwdriver bits, etc. etc.....

  13. AOL. I got a Leatherman Surge for xmas a couple of years back which I
use every single day at work. Managed to take the point off one of the
tools, but not enough to make it unusable.

It cost £80 and came with a thick leather holster and a secondary
    utility knife.

Also got a smaller one in Canada in February, a 'Fuse', which is OK,
but the blades don't open without opening the whole thing, which isn't
    as good.

I have always had a preference for Gerbers due to spending a lot of time
up ladders or hanging from a bits of rope. The one handed operation
business is dead handy when you really need the other one for yourself.

The blades are also good. I have had leathermans which never really held
an edge but the gerbers seem to be made out of good quality steel.

plus they make a cool noise when you open them.

In general agreement with that with the caveat that my gerber tool cross
head screwwdriver bit didn't last five minutes before distorting. The blades
    and pliers *are* excellent though.

"> multitool came to mind this morning.
I vote Leatherman Wave as it's what I've got, and use it a lot, I got it
from this company in America, they sent it with the description of
"Electrical pliers" on the relevent part of the envelope and it got through
Customs unmolested, so cost £55.00 three years ago, I see they are doing a
    special offer at the moment.
If you can be bothered to go through the buying proccess on the site it
apears they are offering them for £48 - delivered - if it doesn't get
    picked up by customs.

I have a victorinox top of the range swiss army knife and a leatherman
multi-tool. I use the swiss army knife every day. The leatherman is ok
but over-rated IMHO. For camping the swiss army knife is tops. They
are both good in different ways. If I had to choose one, it would be
my swiss army knife, more practical and easier to use.

Go to a store and handle both. Which feels easier and has the features
    you need?
