I suspect our respective definitions of "godawful shite" differ
    somewhat.

I would hope so, but TBH have no idea of your musical tastes, if any.

Probably not if you define it as whatever John Peel was enthusiastic about
five years after you first discovered him.

  8. Hardly. My tastes are narrow compared to Mr Peel. I also suspect that he
was far more open minded than me when it comes to new bands or new
    attempts at making music.

  9. Much as it appeals I know I am far too unfit to contemplate a visit to
the true delights of that country. Hence I know I might repeat Mr Peel's
fate and consequently am not planning on doing so.

  10. Well I didn't expect a positive response from you.

How can you ever learn to like anything different if you don't opt to
actually listen to it? I'll freely admit some of the choices are not
what I'd "naturally" buy but you only live once.

  11. Hmm - I haven't decided what I am doing with my music collection when I
pop off. I'll probably insist on it being sold.

  13. I'm not at all surprised. In fact I would be shocked if there was any
    common ground at all.
My purchases have been very limited really. It is well over 6 months
since I last posted a list and the industry is now so heavily biased to
the Christmas market that it's rare anything half decent gets released
in the first 9 months of the year.

Someone on Radio 1 mentioned that at one point he'd had to build a large
extension to his Suffolk home to accomodate his massive collection of
    music.

Some seventy-year-olds can be incredibly fit. I've skied with a few
who can give me a run for my money in the stamina stakes.

Not that much of a run, of course...

    Neal's talking about Paul's selection, not Peel's.

I have only heared one track off that album, forget the name, but I'd
like to hear it in total, that one track was very moving and as you
say, full of emotion, very poignant...

  20. Err well the only explanation I have is that I was brought up on a diet
of Radio 2 in the house - this was old radio 2 before it went all hip.
That meant there was a lot of MOR stuff as well as some rather obscure
big band stuff, country and western and all sorts of stuff that would
probably make you vomit. When I graduated to "pop" music this was in
the late seventies when there was punk, disco and bits and bobs of rock.
My taste expanded through the 80s as I avidly watched the charts but
would also happily sit through Annie Nightingale and Alexis Korner on a
Sunday night on Radio one - not exactly conventional listening.

I also listened to Radio Luxembourg a lot and my best friend's uncle was
a DJ and that gave me access to a huge record collection. I was probably
into Kraftwerk long before it became "hip" as a result of their
influence on house / hip hop in the States. I've always enjoyed dance
music - even though I can't dance for toffee - and that has had pulled
my tastes in all sorts of directions such as trance, drum n bass,
    techno, soul, R 'n B etc.

I keep a reasonable look on the music scene these days but much of the
main chart stuff I can't stand as it lacks what I might term
"originality". I suppose that's me simply getting older and not having
the ears of a teenager. It also grates somewhat that there are so many
horrendous covers of songs from the 80s that weren't masterpieces then
but which I still like the original versions of.

I cannot for the life of me "get into" classical music as the learning
curve just feels too big. As Mr Blaney has disappeared to distant parts
I don't have a local tutor for jazz music anymore so that avenue is a
bit dead these days. The musical world of darsy and simonk is pretty
much impenetrable (to me) but I enjoyed about 98% of the famous CD darsy
pulled together. It's evident from many of the comments from people on
the group that my musical taste might be wider than most but it still
hardly covers the full spectrum of music.

I guess I'm happier than most to take a chance on something different -
most times I like what I hear, on occasion a purchase was a waste of
    money.
