Music

  1. As I'm having a music nostalgia evening I wondered why certain bits of
music have such an importance. It's beyond a link with a special person
or special event - some tunes just seem to mean so much.

Any theories / facts why music seems to have such an importance to human
    beings?

  3. Yes, but I'm about to go out, have a scan of these links

    http://cnx.org/content/m13685/latest/ (understanding music theory,
very basic) The music history and brief physics over view are
    pertinent.

    http://www.loc.gov/folklife/other.html (Ethnographic Resources related
to Folklore, Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, and the Humanities) you'll
have to trawl for what you want though, try not to get side tracked :)

There's lots of neuroscience and physics stuff as well, but that's
buried in my favourites list, whereas the above were in the current
    folder.

Fluffycat is taking a MMus atm, don't think she's lurking though?

Pirsig (see 'Lila') would say that music has 'dynamic quality' the first
time you hear a new piece that moves you. If it is really excellent (so
far as you personally are concerned) it will move you every time you
hear it. The quality may become more static with time, but it will still
have an effect. I hesitate to use the word 'resonate' in case Ace is
    listening.

"pattern recognition". Memories of individual events are linked to

There's a new series [1] on this very subject which started on C5 last Sat
(today's was number 2). Quite interesting, and it talks to you like you're
no too stupid, which is good in today's dumbing-down mind-set.

What if you have no previous memories? I still remember an event in 1960
that happened to me. Early on in high school I stopped to listen to the
band playing al lunch time. I got all choked up over one song they were
    playing.

It triggered no memory of any past event. Just an up-welling of emotion.

    Oh Hell, yes.

I remember many, many years ago being in a village disco[1], holding a
glass of whisky. A record that I was inordinately fond of, and that
tweaked my emotions more than somewhat, came on. I drifted off into a
reverie, and then dropped my glass. Which was annoying.

I looked at one of my friends, who was looking at me in a very peculiar
manner. I asked her "What's up?".

She gave me a very strange look and said "Is your hand OK?".

    "Yes, it's fine, why?"

"That glass broke before you dropped it..."

    Tricky cove, your music.

[1] I did say it was many, may years ago, OK?

    Weirdo.

Happy Thanksgiving, BTW. We've just finished our national covert "Thank

supposed to tell you about it.

  16. And the inhebriated (hmm, spelling, drumk) reply. Cos of the rhythm.
Some songs just resonate (ha!) and evoke, um stuff. My feet hurt. That
was the best night out in ages. Ginge, Statto, you know we passed over
that new club to go to the blue note - we shouldn't have, it's
    fantastic and open later.

"Philosophogy is to philosophy as musicology is to music, or art history
an art appreciation are to art, or as literary criticism is to creative
writing. It's a derivative, secondary field, a sometimes parasitic
growth that likes to think that it controls its host by analysing and
    intellectualising its host's behaviour."

    Guess who.
