I'm looking for an MX style helmet, on a budget - surprise, surprise.

So, I have no more than £175 and the requirements are:

It's MX style, black and has a visor (pinlock available?).

What would the collective recommend - which makes are good value and
which to avoid? Lozzo, your area of expertise?

It's for a snowy, cold, winter trip.

Sounds like you're looking for a road helmet with a peak. Don't know
of any of those Maybe a there's an Enduro helmet that fits the
    requirements?

Be aware that 'proper' MX helmets are IME bloody noisy and draughty at
road speeds. Not that expensive, IIRC, but I haven't replaced my cheap
    one for a while.

You'll be doing some decent speeds at some point in the journey
    i'd have thought.
I used to have one but ditched it pronto as it damn near ripped
my head off at motorway speeds...

Traditional MX style lids are non-visor type, but if you want one that
has a visor you'll either have to spend a fair bit more for an Arai
Tour-X or similar, or go for a budget manufacturer. In the budget
catagory there's a quite popular one made by Airoh called the S4
selling for between 100 and 140 quid. They've been selling a visor
style MX lid for a while, so they have improved them over their first
attempts. Nitro also make the MX450 which is available on ebay for up
to 100 quid. Neither is pinlock ready, but you might be able to
    retro-fit the fixings.

Personally, I'd go for a Nitro because I know the brand better and know
what they build quality is like.

Here's a review of the Airoh:

To say the least. Bloody great in summer, but an utter nightmare in this
    sort of weather.

An acquaintance runs a shop selling stuff for ADV bikes. He stocks the
Airoh S4 and it sells well. He's in Manchester though, so not much use for
    you to try one on.
    http://www.adventurebikewarehouse.co.uk/airoh-s4-matt-black-p-398.html
dearer than the Ebay seller, but any dealer with a shop will be.

    http://preview.tinyurl.com/airohs4free (www.ghostbikes.com)

Brought one of the S4 Free, not matt and used it for the first time off road
    today.

Comfy to use, but needs to break in but had no issues with it all day.
It's quite quiet enough, a little wind noise but only went to 60 mph.

Only downside I found was the visor misted up a bit, but we were riding off
road over the north downs with a lot of mist and fog and was it generally
freezing bloody cold. It was OK on the road before we started off road.
One of the lads has the matt version which is identical and is happy with it
but Ghostbikes are doing the "S4 Free" half price Inc. P&P (£75) at the
    moment.

I've ordered stuff from ghostbikes before. Good price & prompt delivery.

If Simon can determine his size & tolerate the thin stripes then that is a
    bargain.

I'm a medium - just measured my head and all my other helmets are small
mediums 57/58s. Unfortunately they don't have them in that size...

I have found the Nitro MX 450 for GBP99

YMMV but I'd never buy a helmet without trying it on first. Took me an hour
in Hein Gericke to find one that fits as Arai discontinued the RV and its
successor seemed to be a different shape.

  11. I probably won't again in a hurry... bought an Airoh MX helmet on eBay
based on having tried on something similar in Germany (Airoh, Large).
When it arrived it was a bit too large compared to the one in Germany.

    Still, it was cheap...

I've got a hardly used KBC TK Series MX helmet Medium 57/58 size surplus
    to requirements.
Not black (blue , white and silver) and no visor. Proper MX for googles
    only.
The lad found his used to threaten to snap his neck if he popped his
head in to the breeze when riding pillion though. He has a conventional
full face job now for hill climbs.

I wouldn't consider anything other than a Lazer Revolution for that
trip, for all sorts of reasons. An MX lid would be right at the bottom
of the list, only just above a colander.

I'll be using a nice snug full face crash helmet that fits me properly
and only gets draughty when I open the vents.

Sort of dark silver IIRC. Can check simply enough next time I'm in the
    spare bedroom.

One simply *must* look the part, old bean. Though given Simon's
propensity for the army surplus look, I'm surprised he's not going
for a tin hat of some description.
