My DVD player died.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Carmichael, Aug 7, 2009.

  1. What do I replace it with? We've sort of got DVBT, and we're supposed to
get it proper next year. The telly is a boggo ten year old CRT jobby.

Given the technology is moving rapidly and I expect I'll buy a new telly
within a couple of years, something just slightly "out of date" should
fit quite nicely, no? Then when I change the telly, I'll buy something
    more posh like.

    Opinions please.

IMHO it's worth paying a bit more to get SACD and DVDA so you can listen to
'Machine Head' and 'Dark Side of The Moon' in surround sound.
My Pioneer DV-696AV was just over a hundred quid a couple of years ago.
There may be an equivalent Blu-Ray player now.

I'd just buy the cheapest I could find locally. Do ou have Aldi, Lidl
or equivalents in your neck of the bosque?

Nonsense. Do what I did. Spunk 600 quid on a telly, then decide you want
a blu-ray player, continually ratchet up the spec of what you want, and
end up spending another grand on a PC with a BD burner in it.

    A hundred little logical steps.

Probably not worth buying BluRay if you're waiting to by a new TV.

    I have one of these

Kicking around upstairs. It was OK as an interim. Free to good home.

DSOTM is OK, but I still prefer the original.
My Samsung BD1500 BR player was £150 at Christmas. Very good IMHO.

  8. But said old CRT is very nice. When we do get the digital telly, the
    picture is excellent.
There's a Lidl. I'll perhaps send the wife there. She's got no pride -
    look who she married.

  9. You did the whole MyThTV thing, didn't you? Perhaps I should forget the
DVD player, and build a little PC for the job? Or maybe that's over the
top for watching the Simpsons and the occasional film?

Indeed. Almost certainly more than the value.

Proabably the other way round in Paul's case.

If you do go that route, don't underestimate the amount of time it
could take. Any of the open source offerings are likely to take
literally months to get working & stable (if at all), & whilst Vista
Media Centre is a lot easier, there's still no guarantees.

E.g. it point blank refuses to change the channels on my Sky Box, so
only works for me with a freesat or freeview card, & the EPG doesn't
work (I have to use XMLTV & a 3rd party proxy thingy to point MCE to
the XML file). It also fucks the sound up when resuming from sleep, so
I have to use a scheduled task that triggers on resume & kills the MCE
    process.

  15. Heh. No longer the case. I do get in the pool lots of times per day to
cool down (although today the temperature has plummetted to 30C), but my
first San Miguel of the day is now at about 10pm. Studying, see. And
reading. I also have to build a pergola next week. I have a full life.

That's what mine does in Vista. Re-installed many times but no joy. Is
    this workaround W7 only?
If I ever get the enthusiasm to have another go, I'll take you up on
that. It works fine with DVB-T or S, but that means no Eurosport, which
is a pain. What I'd really like is for it to work with more than one
card at a time, so I can record simultaneously from the HVR & PVR150.
Easy enough in MediaPortal (but that has too many other bugs).

Thanks, I'll give that a go at some point.
    That's a W7 thing though isn't it - can't do it in earlier versions
unless you get the add-on pack. That seems to break other stuff though.

Seriously, just pay for Sky Plus and/or buy a Topfield. Life's too
    short.

I'm not bothered enough to spend any money on it. It works well enough
for everything I want other than Eurosport, & I can always get the bike
races from the evil biting fish if I miss them.

What makes you think that Paul doesn't deposit a can of beer at each
end of the pool and just take a quick drink every time he swims a
    length?
