My gearbox

  1. Worn gearbox dogs.
Break it for parts. That's a seriously expensive job.

Niall Rowan, sometime French Runner, had it happen on second gear on his
ZX9R. I gave him the advice I've just given you. He found a dealer who
reckoned that it could be done for about £450-500.

In theory, you just remove the engine, remove the saide casings, clutch,
ec, invert the engine, remove the botom crankcase half, remove and
replace the offending gears, and then reverse the procedure.

In fact, there are *always* other things that need doing. My guess was
that t would cost him about £1200 and IIRC I was only £100 out.

  2. In view of my confession, ie; if I use the clutch it doesn't happen,
    would that affect your diagnosis?
    Oh dear.
Too late to nige it out as perfect, now I've announced it to the world.

Haynes says 4 spanners. I was a motor mechanic - albeit 25 years ago -
and I still have my circlip pliers. Suicide mission?

Find a **** dealer nobody likes. Trade it in. It becomes their problem.
If it changes gear ok with the clutch the tame droid who takes it round the
    block wont notice.

Don't do it to a good dealership or an individual though.

And get a decent bike while you are at it.

Does it have bottom frame rails? If not remove the fairing, exhaust and
fluids then string the bike upside down from the rims with a couple of
hoists and 4 lads. Lift it right up from the rear until vertical, start on
the front then lower the rear to working height.

It sounds insane but getting all the peripherals and electrics off a bike
like that is a feckin nightmare.

  5. What, one with character? At least the old thing just started pretty much
straight away after sitting on the patio without moving for 6 months -
the last 2 of which it hasn't stopped raining.

I meant something that wouldn't suffer expensive failures ;o)

And maybe something with just a flyscreen, it being so warm down there much
    of the time.

Two hours tops to get the engine out of pretty much any bike if you're
handy with spanners. You can do most of the work alone and only need
asistance for the final lifting out onto a crate or carpetted floor.

I should know, I've done it enough times.

I can't I'm afraid. Currently laid up with quite a problematic kidney
disorder. It's so bad that I could only spend 10 minutes out in the
garage moving my toolchest into position beside my bench today before I
was too knackered to do anything else, and it's on fucking great
    castors.

    Actually, that reminds me.

If this gets worse, **** the bikes, put me down for your toolchest.

That subject is a bit close to home at the mo. I was writing my will
the other day and I cannot for the life of me think who I should leave
the tools/boxes to. Caz has a Draper top chest that I bought from a
mate many years ago, and that has all the tools she'll ever need to
maintain her bikes at home to the level she's capable of - most of
those tools I bought for her, so there is a sentimental value attached
to them and she really does look after her stuff. The two other girls
have no interest in spannering at all, and nor does my son. I can't
abide my nephews, with the exception of one of them, and he has no
    interest in spannering either.

So now it's down to choosing between friends, or the estate disposing
of them and pocketting the cash.

  15. That just takes the buscuit. You've turned my rare, on topic, gearbox
thread into a last will and testament.

  19. Oh, I see. Having seen the issue debated many times over the years, and
the frequent assertions that smooth changes without the clutch are
actually better for the bike, I didn't know that it was now official that
    clutchless changes are bad.

But you're probably right at least in as much as *my* clutchless changes
have been on occasion less than perfect.

I shall consider myself ribbed then.

One thing that noone's answered though - how comes if I use the clutch to
change up now, it doesn't jump out of gear? Surely, it's either in gear
or it isn't? Once I've got through this mountain of work, I'll start
    taking things to bits.

    Clumsy cnut.
Just learn to use the clutch and the bike will last you a year or two
longer. Change the gearbox oil to minimise the damage that you have
    already done.
