My gearbox

  1. Yebbut, you're coming at it from the racer pov, where you don't give a
shit if it breaks later, it only has to last the race/season.
I look upon it from a longer term/high milage pov.

Yeah, cos he never does any sort of high mileages on his road bikes,
    right?

I always used cluthcless changes on all my bikes, some of which were
up to about 30k miles when I got shot, IIRC, and never ever had any
    gearbox problems.

Actually, I did once have a broken selctor fork on my XT500 back in
1978, but that was certainly down to other sorts of misuse and not
    clutchless changes.

  3. No, I'm not.
If you want to continue being an ignorant ****, that's entirely up to
you. I sincerely hope I never buy another bike that's been ridden by a
    mechanical ignoramus. Once was enough.

  4. No, not as far as I can see.
30K? That's a fucking ride around the block.
200K, now that's getting on for something, and 400K on the original
    gearbox is more like it.
Oh, by the way - the above mileages were done by people with a clue.

Unlike the cogs in your gearbox.

The 250 twin, the 'sport' no less, certainly did.

I do clutchless upshifts and downshifts on my 'crosser in the higher
gears - I generally use the clutch for upshifts 1-2 and downshifts
3-2-1. I did once have a gearbox problem that required rebuilding the
engine, but I'm fairly sure that had nothing to do with the clutchless
    shifts.

I don't habitualy do clutchless shifts on road bikes simply because I
once tried them many years ago on my shite old XS750. The clutchless
shifts usually felt pretty smooth. This lasted about a week until the
gearchanges suddenly went sloppy - a bolt on the layshaft that
    prevented endfloat had sheared off.

I'm sure modern gearboxes are more than up to it, but once bitten and
    all that....

Oh, and of course I mostly ride shite old Guzzis these days anyway.
