MZ gone

  1. To Lone Wolf, Of This Parish, for well under £300.

Sweller's Patented Starting Ritual came up trumps: fuel on, choke on,
kick over twice, shut choke off, and it will start first kick. And it
    did.

And I *love* LW's trike. Want, want, want.

Oh. That would be me then ;-)
The bike is still on the trailer, sat in the garage. The trike is sulking
    'cos it's been left outside.
Those nice, kind people who dig the roads up decided to close the M6 between
    J5 and J6.
This is only 9 miles from home - it took over an hour to cover that last
nine miles, and would have taken even longer if I didn't have "local
    knowledge"
On the plus side - my waterproofs were not needed.
Trikes do tend to grow on you. As much as I love my bikes, the trike is
    still used a lot.

It ran nicely all the way back, with the exhaust manifold and the first two
feet of downpipe glowing a nice cherry red.

Anyroad - I'm now fed and watered. The trike has been fed twice. A round
trip of 300 miles with no problems.

Thanks, TOG. I'll let you know how the ugly, little two stroke gets on ;-)

    Right.
Follows the MZ ritual of starting.
    Petrol on.
    Choke on.
    Kick twice.
    Choke off.
    Ignition on.
    Kick...................RING ding ding ding . . . .

Yep. That seems to work, so far.

Just got around to unloading the bike off the trailer. Talk about just in
time. Lightning flashing all over the show, rain coming down like it's
going out of fashion. Good job I decided to take the tent down first - it'd
been happily drying out since the weekend. Come to think of it, it's a good
job I picked the bike up last night, I would have been somewhere near
Leamington getting soaked if I had set off this evening.
Can't you just tell I have a new plaything ? Bloody rain. Ah well, there's
    always tomorrow.
I don't hang about ( so why do I always end up with slow bikes ? )

Surely to hell you could have found black oil drums. Neat idea if you
    tour on a pikey's budget.

Can you see a theme forming here ?
Well that's about four quid more than it's worth.

Aye. If we all rode / liked the same then the world would be a boring
    place.

  11. Isn't it? Brilliant.

Get close to, though, and you can see it's well put together and has
    some nice touches.

    And it sounds great.

Fantastic. And that colour would match the Elefant, too.

I see you've got some kind of rack for them to sit on, which I'd need to
molish myself, but the idea's got potential. How much support do they
    need underneath

And that's really the bottom line isn't it (functionality)? ;-)

Apparently to see 101 things you can do with an old "For Sale" sign, a
washing up bowl or an old car mat, go to an MZ rally. ;-)

I've nearly sold my ETZ 251 .. I believe he's changed his mind but is
happy to take the bits as I come across them in the garage and
assemble them back into a bike in his. ;-)

I was asking Mr Burwin about fork re-chroming the other day and he
said he hadn't had it done very often because MZ forks were so cheap
    new. :-(

Could a 251 actually be a viable and cheaper replacement to the CB Two
Fifty (and that's cheap enough ignoring fork stanchions).

    All the best ..

p.s. My mate still has the 251 Saxon Tour I revived from a bike shop
    fire.

I have a mad desire to turn the SpazzTrakka into some kind of pikey
adventure outfit with longer shocks, get the leaning sidewinder sidecar
I have fitted with a luggage rack and fit some panniers/topbox.

What, as in you are interested in it?

I got a call from the shop asking if I would have a look at their
network as " they thought the cables may be melted" ???

I asked why they thought the cables had melted (not a common issue
with Cat5) and I was then informed about the fire. :-(

Long story short, after sorting their problems I took the half melted
Saxon Tour in lieu of a 'Thank you'.

A day in the back garden had it stripped down, another day had all the
discoloured bits repainted and a morning down at Burwins got me a box
of good bits for a couple of hundred quid.

A week later it was back on the road and as good as new.

I rode it for about 6 months (even leant it and some camping gear to a
workmate who had moved from SA in front of his family and was missing
them lots. So we took him to a BM camping weekend in Norwich to help
cheer him up and it did) but I then needed some cash at the same time
as a mate needed some work wheels.

He ran it every day for probably 4 years till he (recently) changed
jobs (further away) and needed something a bit quicker (he had an R1
and R1150GS over the same period but they stayed in the garage <g>).

He's now got a Versys for work and I'm not sure what he's doing with
    the old stroker.

I'm in the process of clearing my garage out so that (for the first
time in 15 years) I can actually do what was planned and be able to
get at least one bike in there and be able to work in the light, warm
and dry for a change! I was slightly slowed up today when I went back
in the garage and a box of stuff had fallen down containing the three
new cans of Hammerite special metals primer. Luckily only one had
burst it's top off and splashed red oxide looking stuff up
    *everything*. :-(

    Ho hum ...

    All the best ..

    T i m

    Jobs once garage is clear.

    1) Get her XV750 re-spoked (all rusty).
    2) Put R100RT back together (clutch splines stripped).
    3) Get the ETZ 251 back and together.
    4) Sort the ETZ 125. ;-)

    Good question.
The rack is also a quick detach item. It started life as a genuine Indian
    pannier set
    as seen here http://www.moonshiners.org.uk/myndd.htm

The steel box panniers that fitted inside were only about five inches wide -
no good to me, far too narrow. I cut the side bars out of the frames, and
just used 'em as a support for my Oxford soft luggage.

The next move was to make 'em quick detach. Luckily the bike now sported a
different type of rear carrier, so the pannier frames were altered to "hook"
onto the carrier. I'm sure I put some pictures on the club site <runs off
    to look>
    Ah - found 'em

A couple of large cable ties keep the whole lot where it should be.

There ain't no hard and fast rules when making stuff - if it looks right,
and it's strong enough for the job - then you shouldn't have any problems.
